Orlando Sentinel - The Orlando Magic late Wednesday disputed a report out of Spain, which had stated that its first round choice in the 2005 Draft, the 11th overall pick Fran Vazquez could be close to signing a two year contract with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.

The report was published on AS.com, but it did not cite the source.

"We fully expect him to be in our training camp this fall," said Scott Herring, Magic director of basketball administration. "We've been in contact with his agent almost daily, and we've heard nothing that would lead us in that direction. That would be 180 degrees different from what we've been hearing.

Hopefully Vazquez can stay. He can put up good numbers from the bench. Maybe 8 and 5.

He sould stay. Play like one season and then see if he wants too go to Spain. He sould like the NBA.

You can't do that, he's a first round pick, so if he signs and NBA contract, he can't go back to Europe the next year. If he's going to go to Europe, he'd have to go now, or wait till his rookie contract expires.

The option of staying in Spain for a more lucrative deal and receiving more playing time and bigger role, while retaining the option to jump to the NBA down the road might be more appealing to him right now.

Well if he was like a early second round pick or late first round I wouldnt mind him doing that but when you are picked so high in the first round he has to try playing in the NBA. And then if it doesnt work out he should go back to spain and work on the stuff he feels are necessary.

Magic Execs Plan To Visit Vazquez

Orlando Sentinel - Dave Twardzik and Otis Smith, co-assistant general managers of the Orlando Magic , are expected to leave for Spain on Monday morning, hoping for a face-to-face meeting and a possible change of heart with first-round draft pick Fran Vazquez.

The Magic used the No. 11 pick in last month's NBA draft to select Vazquez, a 6-foot-10 power forward. They were confident they could sign him for this season.

Vazquez was equally confident about joining the team when he visited Orlando the day following the draft, which he attended with the other top picks in New York.

Vazquez, though, stunned the Magic and his American agent this week by telling reporters in Spain that he would play at least another season in Europe before joining the NBA. By drafting him, the Magic retain his NBA rights indefinitely.

"Should we have sent someone to live with him following the draft? I don't know," Magic President Bob Vander Weide said Friday. "Right now, we need to build a relationship with this kid, extend an extra hand."

NBA has lost some of its glamour. And the GM's got dumber.

Man, why do they even bother flying over there, it's obvious he has no intentions of joining the team.
They should focus in trying to get a decent FA or something.

Only that they hold his rights once he decides to make the jump to the NBA. He won't be able to play elsewhere unless they trade or relinquish his draft rights.

Actually, Fran will be making almost 5 times more money in Europe, after tax is considered. Euro money are tax free, the team tpays the player's tax. Not to mention they buy him a car and a house. Plus Fran gets to live in his own country. The equivalent of the contract he has signed with Girona, would be a 3 year guaranteed NBA deal worth 5-6 million a year... So he probably made the wise business choice...

Players like Nenad Krstic and Carlos Delfino played last year FOR FREE. Nothing went into or out of their pockets. They decided to chase the NBA Dream and not the moolah... Nenad wil lprobably cash in sometime, while Carlos' market value is rock bottom even in Europe. So you can't reallt blame Vazquez for taking the safe way home.

Some players have to contribute money from their own coffers to cover buyouts above the 500k region. If a guy has a 1m buyout clause, the NBA team will pay 500k tops, and teh player has to cover the rest 500k by himself. So if his rookie contract is 500k per year, he essentially makes no money in hi sfirst year overseas.
