How do you watch basketball?

Postby ntong on Mon Jun 13, 2005 3:16 am

Do you watch it critically, like do you try to follow every play, and try to see whtat the team is doing right/wrong? Or, do you just pretty much follow the score and see the nice plays?

A little of both.

It's interesting to see why teams are winning and losing. Larry Brown is right that it's usually a result of trying to play one-on-one and put up weak jumpers instead of passing the ball and getting easy layups.

But I like the rush of a highlight, and never knowing when it's coming.

I guess the first one. I can't really just sit back and watch it, I know too much about all the strategy to disregard it. Just like I can't just try and enjoy 50 Cent. I listen to too much good rap.

Shut up Jowe.

I'd say both as well. I don't make notes or anything, but having watched basketball for a long time I do pick things up and make observations that I'll usually comment on later in conversation or here in the forum. I suppose I'm mostly watching it for the sport but I can't do it without some analysis/criticism...even if it's just muttering to myself about what I'm seeing.

Oh, and I too prefer to sit.

I like to lie, not sit. Putting a matress in front of my TV was the smartest thing I ever did. I just need another one for the in fron of the computer and I'm set.

If its the Pacers I analyze the hell out of the game. I go nuts watching the Pacers. I sit really close to the TV and I get in to sort of a trance. Im not even the same person...

If its anything else I do more of the second.

sitting down and cursing @ the TV usually....depends who's playing. If it's Detroit then there's plenty of cursing.

Sometimes i watch the game as it is, follow the ball, other times i look at what plays the teams are running or just individual matchups (which are great when trying to learn the game)

I'm practically sitting on the TV doing my best Tarzan impression whenever a big play happens. Other than that, I'm sitting on the couch screaming at the TV. Needless to say, my family hates it when I watch basketball, especially the Timberwolves.

my answer to this is based on if i am alone at home watching it, at home/friends house watching it with buddies, or at a bar

1=i study the game
2=little of both
3=i just kinda follow it and yell at big plays

I watch whoever has the ball. Sometimes when my dad or the commentators point something out (like "look at how Reggie uses those screens") then for awhile I'll start focusing on Reggie Miller just watching him go back and forth like a pinball.

when it's the bulls, i'm normally yelling, whether it's at home or at the bar. same at the players on my fantasy team or my opponents players. it's gets pretty crazy if i know i'm close to hitting the last leg of a 3 game parlay :)

for other teams, i occasionally try to follow certain players: i.e. watch how hamilton sets up his man to go around screens, pj brown's position defense, etc

also my friends and i try to predict what the team will run out of timeouts/who will take the last shot.

and of course i normally have a drink or 2
Jump.

I watch and try to analyze the plays, when it turns out to be a nice play like a dunk, a three, a badass block, or a steal, I usually yell or curse depending on which team did it.
When I'm eating or drinking while watching the game, I just wait for the nice plays.

I watch it with a Playboy in my hand with my feet kicked up on the stool :lol:

To be serious, I mainly watch it and just look at what different players do. That's why when I play basketball, I try to do some things that they do during the game and it increases my basketball IQ. When I watch the Grizz game, I'm so animated and I act like I'm the coach :lol:

I know jack all about the plays and strategies :lol: but I usually watch the guys without the ball too... because thats usually where the good stuff comes from, thats how all those crazy alley-oops, back door plays for dunks and nice give-n-go's begin.

I watch for fun but obviously can't help but notice the strategies that are employed, as an true baller would know....

as Mafia said earlier, you can definitely learn from watching NBA bball....I learned and incorporated a stutter step that I saw Jordan do in one of his videos....whilst it wasn't one of his signature moves, I just keep on watching the play over and over again, just concentrating on his footwork....this proved to be a great addition to my game as a slow, unathletic white boy, I was able to use a move to score at the elbow of the key that was virtually unstoppable, regardless of how tall or athletic the defender was....and I added variations to it as I went along....sometimes (often) against quicker defenders I would take a stepback jumper which was money....sometimes I took it to the rack....sometimes I took one step and fired away....sometimes I would shoot in the middle of the stutter....sometimes I would use it to set up a teammate....just whatever the defense gave me....I luv that move (Y)

don't mind me, I have a habit of going off-topic....I blame Mafia :wink:

oh, and I generally sit down....occasionally with a :beer: in hand as I'm usually at the pub as I don't have cable tv :(
