Next Wolves Coach?

Postby Riot on Thu Jun 02, 2005 11:17 am

Well, rumors are that Owner Glen Taylor and GM Kevin McHale are very interested in PJ Carlismo (spell?). And he seems like a very good canidate for the job, however...there is one super big problem. Kevin Garnett.

On a few sites (www.twincities.com and www.kfan.com) say that KG has told Taylor he will not play for PJ. KG has voiced his opinion on the coaching slot and he wants Paul Silas as the head coach. Taylor and McHale have talked to Silas but weren't very impressed with him.

Now, do you take the coach you think is the best for the job or do you take the coach that KG thinks is the best for the job?

I don't think that KG is that unreasonable even though he must be frustrated that the wolves arent getting far... i think he is sensible enough to accept what is best for the team and franchise. If i were the Wolves I'd arrange a meeting between KG and PJ and also bring in Silas for another interview.

In the end, the coach best for the job is always derived from who is the better coach for KG. If they bring in someone he doesnt like, doesnt necessarily mean he will play bad on purpose... or call for a trade straight away.

If the circumstances stay like this, i would take a gamble on Salis. KG is a franchise player and not many ppl could be gotten in exchange!

Obviously there are times when the front office has to put their foot down and there has to be some give and take with the star player on both sides. Carliesimo isn't a bad coach but he does have a rep for not getting along with players that goes back further than the Sprewell incident in 1997/98. If KG as the team leader has some real objections to Carliesimo being brought aboard, then it would be in the team's best interests to at least listen to them.

It'll be funny if the Twolves do get Carliesimo and KG ends up demanding a trade. I would love to see Riot's face after that. But they need to go with the coach that KG wants because its KG's team and without him, the Twolves wouldn't be the team they were a couple of seasons ago and have the oppurtunity of making the playoffs every year. Your paying the guy like a $100 million dollars and Riot, you call him the best player in the league so why not listen to the best player in the league

He is the best player in the league; however if you honestly don't think Silas is the right coach for the job do you take him anways just go keep KG happy in the short run or do you take PJ and take a gamble if KG will like him?

It depends how strongly KG is against Carliesimo coaching the team, and whether Carliesimo is truly a good fit for the team that will likely be out on the floor next season. Does KG just prefer the idea of Silas coaching or is he really intent on playing elsewhere if Carliesimo is brought into the fold?

If it's the latter, I'd say it would be better not to bring in Carliesimo but perhaps find another candidate. The Timberwolves probably won't get anything fair for KG in return. I don't think KG is the type to slack off if he's unhappy with the situation, but one only has to look at the Shaq situation last year. Granted, pleasing Kobe who was a free agent at the time might have made the Lakers more willing to get rid of Shaq for less, but the similarity is Shaq had a couple of years left on his contract, as KG does at the moment (actually through to 2009 I believe). Even though KG doesn't have as much leverage as he would being a free agent sooner rather than later, I don't think Minnesota would be keen to explore the trade possibilities just yet.

I don't think KG would demand a trade, because he has said numerous times he is staying here and he has been with us through thick and thin. I just think he would rather play for Silas than PJ and management has done enough to piss KG off lately.

PJ bothers me for some reason. I've seen him do some coaching in the recent All Star Sophmore (or Rookie) team, and he was just screaming and screaming to the point where it actually scared me. I thought he was a nut case, but ironically enough, the players hardly noticed him

If management keep making what he feels to be the wrong moves and their relationship worsens, perhaps he'll rethink that committment. I agree it's unlikely KG would demand a trade so early in the proceedings, but if the situation gets worse and the Wolves' management are being apathetic towards his concerns, I wouldn't be surprised if he asked for a trade.

After all, professional basketball is still a job for the players. When you're not satisfied with your job or are unhappy with your working conditions, you seek other employment. In the NBA, there's basically two options there. Retire and pursue other ventures within or outside the sport, or look to move to another team. At this point of his career, KG is hardly going to choose the former, and like I said it's only likely he'll explore the latter option if things really go bad in Minnesota.

Even if they hire Carliesimo, KG will just give him a few right hooks to the jaw at first chance and everything will be fine.

It's a reunion between PJ and Sprewell.
What will be the relationship like this time?

Well, I have read that PJ encouraged Popovich to trade for Sprewell the off-season where he was on the block (when he got shipped to Minnesota). I heard him and PJ have patched things up and he has no problem coaching Sprewell again.

St. Paul Pioneer Press - Current San Antonio Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo said Thursday that he is still interested in the Minnesota Timberwolves coaching vacancy.

In his first public comments about the interview, held last Friday in San Antonio, Carlesimo told the Pioneer Press in a telephone interview that he hopes he will become the Wolves' next head coach.

Carlesimo remains optimistic regarding coaching Latrell Sprewell, assuming he is still in Minnesota next season. In 1997, while both were with the Golden State organization, Sprewell chocked Carlesimo during a practice.

"I don't think there's any question that we could work together," Carlesimo said of the possibility of being reunited with Sprewell in Minnesota. He said he believes Sprewell remains one of the top players in the league. "But that's not my call."

That's all well and good, but Spree's likely on his way out. KG's signed until 2009, he's the one management should be concerned about. Have you got a link to any sources that quote him as being unhappy with the choice of Carlesimo?

Well, there is a lot of rumors going around. Sid Hartman (Wolves writer for Star Tribune) says Taylor talked to him and say KG never said he wouldn't play for PJ or didn't like PJ.

However, this other Wolves writer for KFAN says he saw a meeting between Taylor and Garnett and found out that KG doesn't want PJ as a head coach.

http://www.kfan.com/otherside/doogiesdirt.html

I believe the Pioneer Press also reported that KG doesn't want to play for PJ, however the Star Tribune says that is false. So it really is unknown right now and it's basically a game of who is more credible and who do you trust more. I hate the Pioneer Press because they are hardly credible and Doogie (kfan) doesn't seem too reliable either. Star Tribune is very credible, so I think it's not true that KG won't play for PJ...it doesn't sound like something KG would say or do.

I have a feeling Sam will be back, since KG really wants Sam to come back. Wally might be gone because of his comments he made and his contract.

Thanks for the link. I suppose there isn't any reason for KG to have such a strong objection to Carlesimo getting the Wolves job, but if there is it's a situation that needs to be resolved.
