Suns GM Colangelo named Exectutive of the Year

a little surprised this fell under the radar...

i thought him, riley, and paxson were all worthy of winning the awards

colangelo had the guts to trade marbs, used the cap space he gained wisely, and quickly turned a lottery team into a title contender.

paxson on the other hand, didn't have cap space or talent in place, so he used the draft and made some perceived lop sided trades to turn an annual stinker into a playoff team.

i guess coolmac was half right about the suns sweeping the regular season awards

I think Colangelo really did deserve it though because like you said, he had the guts to trade Marbz and when it looked like the Suns got the worse of the deal with the Knicks, they ended up improving in the off-season with the signings (of course Nash and Q).

I think John Paxson should have won. He executed the best NBA draft the league has ever seen.

Gordon, Deng, Nocioni, Duhon all in the same draft???

Thats outstanding.

If Gordon, Deng, Nocioni, and Duhon were drafted by, say, San Antonio, would they be as good as they are? They're in an environment (Chicago) that gives them the opportunity to grow fast.

I don't get how that discredit's him? They're still pretty very good players drafted and signed, I mean Duhon was in the second round, and Nocioni was signed as an Fa, their's not fault in that.

that makes no sense. It doesn't discredit what JP did at all.

Exactly what I'm saying, sorry, but that was one of the stupidest things I've heard in a while, I mean he got them so that they could play on the team, so because they wouldn't play on elite teams who already have good players, he did a bad job?

I mean these guys would get significant minutes, be in the rotation, or possibly start on 70% of the teams in the league, even if they wouldn't, who cares, they're starting for Chicago, and winning.

i guess it's a good choice, not that many great moves though. I'd take Pat Riley though....he got Shaq for Odom and Butler and managed to sucker Kobe into taking Brian Grant. That's genius.

Whoa, whoa, I didn't think this would get blown out of proportion. I was merely raising a question, and I'm in no way trying to discredit Paxson for his achievements. I just gave room for discussion, and I'm glad people are responding, but I should've made it clear that I wasn't trying to downplay Paxson's accomplishments.

i wouldn't call the grant part genius. it was almost out of necessity he had to be added just for salary purposes since shaq's makes an outrageous amount of money.

lol cyanide.. the wheels are really turning now, aren't they?

Tough call, but i'd still give it to Paxson.

Coangelo was a big fan of Marbury actually. But the reality was they knew Marbury was going to exercise an option in his contract to get out of Phoenix at the end of the year, leaving the Suns with nothing for him. This way he got 2 1st round draft picks from NY out of it. And Isaiah was pushing hard for Marbury on his own. It kinda just fell in place for Coangelo.

Let's remember he's the one who got Marbury & Hardaway into Phoenix in the first place.

Paxson, so far in his short career, has been nothing but gold.
