Darius Songaila Becoming Very Solid

Postby -BHZMAFIA- on Thu Mar 03, 2005 2:17 pm

Well since Webber is gone, Songaila gets the starting spot. He has played solid in previous games where he started. Right now, it looks like he will become a canidate for most improved player if he can keep playing solid basketball. If he doesn't get it this year, he is a strong canidate for next year. In the 3 games he has started after Webber left, he scored 23 pts and 12 rebs against Dallas, a disappointing 4 pts and 5 rebs against 76ers, only played 19 mins against Wizards and had 4 pts and 1 reb, didnt play against the Bobcats due to injury and tonight against the Magic had 15 pts and 7 rebs.

solid = good consistency
songaila = not solid.

songaila's got talent, but he's 1/2 years from being solid. MIP i think goes to lebron james. comeback player of the year is grant hill hands down.

and it's darius, not david... i think.... kings suck anyway :D

The very first Most Improved Player was a player in his second season - Alvin Robertson.

:lol: oops about the david

about the MIP, i wasnt really saying he should get it this year, because it would be too late for him to get it since he didnt have the starting spot at the beginning of the season. i was mainly talking about next season because he may have a starting spot. whenever i see him play, he can rebound well and has a good jumpshot. i think around this time next season, he will be averaging 13-15ppg and 7-8rpg if he starts for the kings.

nah, Songaila won't average that for his career....he's a career backup....but I really like what he does on the court and I'm a big fan of him....he'll just never be anything more than a very serviceable backup....

as for saying Songaila is becoming very solid....I think Songaila has always been solid, going right back to his rookie year with the Kings....it's just his minutes that weren't consistent....

good old Lithuanians....gotta luv them....

Ilgauskas is, IMO, one of the top 5 or 3 centers in the league. (Y)

IMO:

1 - Shaq
2 - Yao
3 - Brad Miller
4 - Ilgauskas

Well... regarding Songaila, I saw him play yesterday against Miami...I don't know if he is becoming very solid. He hardly had any plays called for him. He scored 10 points, all on putbacks or pick and rolls with Bibby, when he had no one else to pass to... hitting that mid-range. But he shot 4-10, and he was destroyed by Udonis Haslem, who covered him pretty well and had 13 boards. Songaila must develop a go-to move, a back-to-the-basket game, must improve his pass, footwork and gain strenght...

Songaila is playing well because he is a perfect fit for the Kings offense. As most of us already know Sacramento Kings big men have to be able to pass well and shoot the ball well, and Songaila can do that.

I'm not saying he would just dissapear in another offense, but the Kings offense is a perfect offense for a player like him.

And I'm still sticking to Primoz Brezec for MIP. :)

That's alright with me, all of them start the games as centers, but they (Dirk, Amare, Wallace) are all PF's IMO...

And I wouldn't say Amare is a top 3 center because look at where he is at without Nash. How many points did he average with Nash out and what was his FG%?

Amare in games w/o Nash (stats from ESPN)
103-108 loss at Washington - 26 pts - 9-24 fg - 8-11 ft
80-94 loss at Pistons - 16 - 5-18 - 6-7
79-88 loss vs. Grizzlies - 8 - 4-11 - 0-2
118-101 win vs. Clippers - 17 - 5-9 - 7-10
124-123 win at Dallas - 33 - 13-20 - 7-10
113-120 loss vs. Celtics - 27 - 9-14 - 9-9

Totals - 127 - 45-96 (46.9%) - 37-49 (75.6%)

Averages - 21.2 ppg - 7.5-16 - 6.2-8.2

That's still pretty solid, in terms of ppg and FG%, but not quite near his average.

And yes, Amare is not a center, even though he is playing in that position. The guy keeps telling people that he is a power forward.
