Postby Jona on Fri Feb 11, 2005 3:41 am

I'm not sure if this thread belongs here but I couldn't find a more appropriate forum for it. It is like a general basketball issue. :?

What is exactly Skip to my Lou?? I know it's Rafer Alston's nickname, but what is it really?? I heard that it's a move, and if so, how does it look like?? Is it a crossover, a flashy pass??

Can anybody help me?? :)

Rafer Alston was playing in a playground game, I think it was in Rucker, and two of the guys watching the game, famous for giving out nicknames (though I forget their names), saw Alston skipping down the court, dribbling the ball. One of the guys stood up and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, Skip to My Lou!" referring, of course, to Rafer Alston.

The story was in one of the And 1 Mixtapes, one of the first ones that was actually a tribute to Rafer "Skip to My Lou" Alston.
The task of the artist is to translate for us the essence of things we take for granted.

Yes but that's not why he's called Skip to My Lou.
BTW I'm pretty sure the guy's name was Duke Tango, he named everyone else.

No, Dunke Tango was the And 1 announcer. Rafer got that nickname before he was with and1.

It's a move when you prance/skip down the court letting the ball roll while you put your hands on your hips.

No, Dunke Tango was the And 1 announcer. Rafer got that nickname before he was with and1.
He was also an announcer at Rucker for years before the And 1 team, so it could hve possibly been him. I know he named The Future, who also got his nickname before the And 1 days.

It is indeed a children's nursery rhyme. I couldn't remember the lyrics, but I Googled it:

http://www.singingbabies.com/skip.html
http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Lobby ... s/k555.htm
http://duchessathome.com/childrensongs/ ... ugene.html

Seems to be a few variations. I'd never heard the term used in basketball slang, but I haven't watched a lot of streetball/And1 Mixtape stuff.
