John Stockton's jersey got retired. To me, he was the best pure point guard in the history of the game. If Malone gets the scoring record, it gives the Stockton/Malone duo justice. Stockton will be leader in assists (and steals), Malone in scoring. If the Jazz didnt run into the Bulls, he would have been part of one of the great teams in league history. Congratulations John.

agreed, and i would even call him one of the toughest players ever.. he was setting screens on people that were way taller and bigger than him.

another interesting state, in his nba career he played 99% of his games.. 1,504 out of 1,526 games.. he's only missed 22 games his entire career

I read a Kidd quote which was interesting.

He said, "When u think John Stockton u think of his assists record but many overlook that he is also the leader in steals. The guy is special cause he plays both sides of the court.." or something like that.

When they were hanging his jersey the announcer or who ever was talking said "The best point guard to ever play the game" and there is little or no argument for that.

The guy had everything, he could make shots, play defense, do whatever you needed him to do. I wish he didn't retire, he would still definitley be a great PG in this league.

yeah the best point guard to ever play the game. a typical kind of point guard. coz when you talk about point guard first thing to come in your mind will be a small guy good in dribbling, good court vision and a very good passer.. these all traits are in Stockton.

if there will be few argument it will be Magic... But coming from a Lakers fans, Stock will be the best PG in the league.

His scoring ability was also often overlooked. He was a tremendous shooter (though his form wasn't exactly textbook) who hit some huge shots during his career, and when called upon could score a lot of points. With the Mailman around and a couple of other capable support players (such as Jeff Hornacek), he never had to be a high scoring point guard like some of the guys who came along during the 90s.

But I think he would have been pretty effective in such a role too. After all, Magic was able to increase his scoring with Kareem's decline while still being the NBA's best playmaker. If he had needed to, I think Stock could have made the transition. But as it was, he was an awesome player and a prime example of an unselfish point guard. A well-deserved honour, I would lament the fact he never won a title but I can't pretend I'm unhappy with the result of the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals.

John Stockton and Reggie Miller were the only two players to not be initmidated by Michael Jordan during his later years in Chicago. I would say it's too bad the Jazz ran into Chicago in the Finals and didn't win but can't because those Finals had the absolute best basketball I've ever seen and I had fun watching them, even if the Jazz lost. I remember one of the Jerrys and Rodman both said after the 97 Finals that there should have been co-champions because of how close the Jazz were to the Bulls.

This thread makes me think, how many true PG's are in the league today?

I just thought about this and there are too many shoot-first PG's in the league today, I can only think of two true PG's right now off the top of my head, I'm not liking this one bit.

I believe he didnt come into the league a scorer but because he knew his team needed another opption in offence.. he practised and practised until he had that three point range.. kudos to him.

Maybe his work ethic hasnt been as much as Jordans... but im not sure bout that one!
