My family moved to Uniondale, home of the then-ABA NY Nets, in 1974). I was 13 at the time and Dad would take us to the Nassau Coliseum to see their games. I had the privilege of watching Doc, George 'Iceman' Gervin, David 'Skywalker' Thompson, 'Super-John' Williamson, Artis Gilmore, Dan Issel, Bobby Jones and other ABA stars in their prime. The NBA saw Julius Erving, the ABA saw Dr.J. Doc was to me what Jordan was to younger fans like Andrew.
To this day, one of my saddest sports moments was Roy Boe selling Doc's rights to the 76ers. We all were looking forward to see what that the Nets (with Doc) would have accomplished in the NBA. Could they have been a legit threat to teams like Golden State & Boston, who won titles in '75 & '76, respectively.
At that time, I was more into Doc and the Nets because the Knicks were slowly regressing from the championship years (even with Bob McAdoo, they didn't make the playoffs in 1976-77). We were all on a high from the Nets winning the last ABA title, then BOOM, the news came. I was so sick to my stomach.
