The wheels are in motion for Tall Blacks captain Pero Cameron to become the next New Zealand player in the elite National Basketball Association (NBA).

Detroit Pistons head coach Larry Brown said Cameron would be invited to attend a training camp with his NBA championship team after the Olympics.

Brown said he intended to sign the 1.98m, 130kg forward.

Brown, head coach with the USA basketball Dream Team in Athens, said he was determined to get the New Zealand and Waikato Titans player to the US for the trial.

"I'm going to do everything in my power to give him a chance to try-out for Detroit. I badly want him to try-out."

New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin approached Brown after the their pre-Olympics warm-up 68-94 loss to the US in Jacksonville, Florida, last month, asking for his opinion on his star player.

"He said to me, I don't understand why he isn't in the NBA. I said, `I don't disagree'."

Somehow I dont see Pero making the NBA he only averaged something like 12ppg in the NBL.

Like many promising international players, he's drawing interest from a team that already has an established rotation and talented players at his position. The same thing is happening with Matt Neilsen and the Denver Nuggets. The teams that are willing to take a chance on these guys are the ones that can really afford to take a chance.

The international players that get the chance to make the most impact are the ones that go through the US college system or are drafted high in the lottery by teams that are weak at the position they play. It's unfortunate, but at the same time one can understand why a team would be unwilling to shake up a rotation that is fairly solid and make changes to accomodate a player who might not be able to play well at the NBA level.

I don't think offering a player a chance to be a part of training camp hurts roatations.. every team is trying to improve, and international players are becoming a better prospect than college players...

Oh, it doesn't hurt them, but what I mean is most coaches won't disrupt a fairly successful rotation for a player who is viewed as a project.

Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:10 pm

A project who is already 30 years old...

Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:36 pm

Project is probably the wrong word to use there, but international players are often given project-like status.

Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:40 pm

Mostly because they enter the league at very young age ;)

Guys like Rigadau (sp), Rebraca, weren't really considered projects when entering the league either.

I posted this on Other Leagues, didnt see this one

What's that got to do with this thread?

Wed Aug 25, 2004 3:02 am

He had to post in an active topic, didn't he?

*sigh* Jae's such an amateur. :P

Pero who? No interest from my part.

Is he a small forward type or a power forward type? Darko must be praying he isn't a PF.

Wed Aug 25, 2004 5:29 am

He's fat

Wed Aug 25, 2004 7:47 am

He's a power forward in the NBL, but if he does make it to the NBA it will be ard for him to play there caus he is only 6"6 but he is 285 pounds :D

Wed Aug 25, 2004 7:54 pm

Geese... well Brown downgraded that Lithuainan PG.. anyone read it??

Pero will do jack all in the NBA!

Wed Aug 25, 2004 10:35 pm

this is a damn joke. Looks like any fat bastard can get a tryout.

Pero has no hope in hell, it's shameful that he's even getting a chance. (n) No doubt he can be craftier than expected at times, but he's more likely to eat all the teams donuts than make the team.

Wed Aug 25, 2004 10:45 pm

well, I think he has a shot at leading the team in Donuts Per Game. However, don't expect Coleman to back down...that's been his category for a while now.

LOL  (y) Bring in Robert Traylor, Kemp and Oliver Miller and you have a great Donut starting 5.

Thu Aug 26, 2004 8:17 am

haha..dont forget the Most Dominant donut eater Ever

Thu Aug 26, 2004 8:28 am

I didn't really see much from Pero at all apart from the fact that he is not a bad shooter from 3 point range. Wouldn't be suprised if we see a few more international players going to training camps with NBA teams.

Thu Aug 26, 2004 8:12 pm

^^^a role that Coleman already fits

Thu Aug 26, 2004 8:43 pm

Yay. Lets all sign fat undersized power forward 3-pt jackers who should be playing rugby instead of basketball.

Woo.

Seriously i do not see what Brown sees in Pero. :? There are so many more international players that are better than him.

Fri Aug 27, 2004 1:34 am

Jasikevicius?

Fri Aug 27, 2004 3:23 am

This is a joke right?

Pero plays in the nbl now but before that he spent a couple of years with non other than my home town chester jets.

Ive seen this guy play alot, sure he can nail a three but like SkipToMy_Lou said he's 6.6 and IS 285lbs, he shoots from the outside alot and has a poor post game while playing power forward.

Theres no way he could play in the nba, its not like he's a kenny Thomas type of 6.6 player he doesnt really play defence and gets burnt down the court on the break all the time.

Cameron, the Tall Blacks captain, has left his agent to handle the finer details of an offer from the NBA champion Detroit Pistons to attend their training camp in October.

Cameron was on court for the first full practice as the NZ Breakers officially started their preparations for the Australian NBL season at Trusts Stadium in Henderson yesterday.

And it was his current team –- and not the NBA trial –- that was on Cameron's mind.

"What I'm thinking is Breakers, mate," the 1.9m power forward said.

"This is where I'm signed and that's the way I have got to think. They're the ones paying the bills."

During the Athens Olympics, Team USA and Pistons coach Larry Brown commented to reporters he wanted to invite Cameron to the training camp but at the time had not made any approach.

AdvertisementAdvertisementYesterday, Cameron confirmed he and Brown did talk briefly at the Olympics. He would not divulge what was said but did acknowledge an offer to attend the Pistons' training camp was made, which his agent is working through.

"I really couldn't give you a straight answer on that," the Waikato Titan said, when questioned on where the process was at or the likelihood of him temporarily leaving the Breakers to trial.

"Until they give me something on paper, it's just hearsay. Well, not hearsay, but it's nothing until I get something."

Cameron was joined by fellow Tall Blacks Dillon Boucher, Paul Henare and Aaron Olson at yesterday morning's practice, just five days after arriving home from Athens, where he averaged 10.8 points per game. Cameron enjoyed a four-day break with his family before resuming training.

The Breakers, who play pre-season games against the Hunter Pirates and Wollongong Hawks this weekend in Henderson, welcomed new import Shawn Redhage and the return of fellow American Mike Chappell, the second Waikato Titan in the squad, to the practice court yesterday.

Cameron raved about the new off-season additions, including 2.13m Australian centre Ben Pepper to replace Ben Melmeth, back-up shooting guard Ben Thompson to fill the gap left by Tall Black Phill Jones' departure and power forward Redhage.

The Breakers worked in five-on-five game situations yesterday and have only 22 days together before their season-opener against the Adelaide 36ers on September 29. With two-a-day practices starting today, it becomes a race to create chemistry.

"It's day one. I'd be able to give you a better idea about that in about a week," Cameron said.
