Mourning Will Attend Camp

Mourning
East Rutherford, NJ, Sept. 1 -- Seven-time NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning will participate in the Nets’ 2004-05 training camp in an attempt to revive his NBA career, Nets’ CEO Rod Thorn announced today.

“We look forward to Alonzo joining the Nets in training camp," said Thorn. "Hopefully he will be able to resume his career and play at the high level he has in the past.”

“I am feeling great and am excited about attending training camp and possibly resuming my career, said Mourning.”

Mourning, who signed with the Nets prior to the 2003-04 season, played in 12 games for New Jersey before he was forced to stop playing basketball on November 25, 2003 due to focal glomerulosclerosis. On December 19, 2003, Mourning underwent kidney transplant surgery in which he was given a kidney donated by his cousin. In 12 games for New Jersey, Mourning averaged 8.0 ppg and 2.3 rpg in 17.9 mpg.

A 12-year NBA veteran, Mourning posts career averages of 20.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 2.98 bpg in 634 games with Charlotte, Miami and New Jersey. Drafted by Charlotte in the First Round (2nd overall pick) of the 1992 NBA Draft and selected to the All-Rookie First Team, Mourning was a seven-time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1998-1999, 1999-2000), a member of the All-NBA First Team in 1998-99 and Second Team in 1999-2000, a two-time member of the All-Defensive First Team (1998-99, 1999-2000) and was the winner of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2001-02.

Mourning was also a member of the gold medal winning 2000 Team USA Olympic Team and was named the 2000 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. Alonzo will be made available to the media once training camp begins

"ZO will, Zo will, rock you! rock you!"

damn straight- he'll come off the bench and kill everyone.

Good luck to him!

Wasn't it only a month ago that the Nets weren't interested in bringing Zo back? Seems to be a complete change of heart, which I won't fault them on because they are certainly free to change their position, but it's odd to see them go from seemingly hoping he'd stay retired to seemingly being enthusiastic about him taking part in training camp.

Probably because Kidd won't be able to play for two months. Losing by 10 is better than losing by 20 I guess.

I know Zo wants to play, but why risk it? Your health & family come first.

Is this really happening? OK, Mourning said he'll be ready for the training camps, but what is going on with other now-castrated-but-once-superheroes-of-the-90'? Grant Hill is saying that he's ready like Haley Joel Osment losing his innocence. Further, Dennis Rodman is doing weights, MJ is killing youngsters and shit like that just continues to pop up constantly. So, how much truth is in any of this? Grant Hill's El Grande Comeback might happen, but I said the same thing to my dad a couple of years ago. MJ? Naaa, he doesn't want to lower his average. Dennis? I love thi guy, but seing him get his ass kicked in the frickin' ABA just hurts me. He'll have to rebuild his ego another way... But it sure would be nice to see Kobe's ass kicked by both Shaq and MJ .

Zo knows this, but keep in mind doctors will be keeping an extremely close eye on him so as soon as their is any trouble, he'll pull the plug like he has had to in the past. Basketball means alot to zo, and I give him all the credit in the world for giving it another go. I'm rooting for him (Y)

Can someone explain how he can get back onto the court... after kidney failure..he got a new kidney. How will that affect him? When will he have to quit again?

What circumstances will force him to retire if he comes back?

I'm a bit unsure...
