Mutumbo to the Rockets?

Postby Jackal on Thu Aug 12, 2004 11:55 am

Story.

Mutombo, who returned from a family vacation to the south of France Tuesday, is unsure he wants to play for the rebuilding Bulls but won't retire. He planned to speak to his agent David Falk last night about their strategy. Falk likely will try to force a trade to the Rockets.

"I still feel I have three, four years left in me," said Mutombo, 38. "A lot of GMs want me on their team. It's not like Mutombo's done. My age has nothing to do with what I want to accomplish. I know what it takes to win and that's one of the things left is winning a championship."

Wouldn't mind him coming off the bench as a backup. Just don't overpay him.

He still has something to offer off the bench, give Yao a spell, or maybe occassionally do the twin-towers thing :)

He would be useless in teaching the Bulls youngsters because A) Nobody can understand him, and B) Eddy Curry might just be a dumb ass.

Knowing the Bulls' luck, he'll be traded and he'll start averaging 20 & 10. :?

I rather play Oakley.

In all honesty, I don't think Mutombo will go to Houston and if he does, he won't do much.

I don't think that Mutombo would be that bad as a backup. He may not be the most athletic person, but it's not like they will need him to score. And he definately knows defence, unlike some other back up centres. If he were to go to the Rockets it would pretty much ensure that McGrady would be playing with a centre on the court at all times would would be able to give him some backup when he gambles on defence.

The onlt thing Mutombo would do is teach Curry how to travel more efficiently and how to flop

I think he's washed up....10mpg max for this guy if that

I'm surprised that Mutombo is keen to go to Houston. The last couple of seasons, he hasn't been too happy about being a backup after spending the first decade of his career as a starter. I don't think a twin tower combination with Yao and Mutombo would be all that effective, so I'm guessing mostly he'd be on the floor when Yao is not, which means he won't be getting the minutes he seems to feel he should be getting.

Why wouldn't they be effective? Yao would dominate the PFs. His ranged game is very effective at PF, and they'd be a defensive terror as well.

True, but that would leave the Rockets without a true centre on the bench. Mutombo is still capable of being a solid backup, coming in to block a few shots and grab a few rebounds when Yao heads to the bench.

Well they arent supposed to start together, but while Mutombo complained about being a backup to NBA greats Nazr Mohammed and Kurt Thomas, he might accept coming off the bench behind Yao Ming. Also I thought you were just talking about in-game situations where they wouldn't fit together, while I think they would ;)

You're right, it could work but only for short stretches. If Mutombo is going to be the backup centre but can only give the Rockets about 15 productive minutes, playing him alongside Yao frequently will leave them at a disadvantage when Yao needs to sit.
