Mavs, Magic talk trade

By Art Garcia

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

The Mavericks and Orlando are discussing a multiplayer deal that would include Magic power forward Drew Gooden, according to an NBA source. The Mavs' package would likely involve Jerry Stackhouse or Christian Laettner, both acquired in a trade with Washington last month.

Gooden, the fourth pick of the 2002 draft out of Kansas, has averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds over two seasons. Set to earn $3.2 million this season, Gooden began his career with Memphis before being traded midway through his rookie year.

Laettner, in the last year of his contract at $6.2 million, would provide salary-cap relief for the Magic after this season. Stackhouse, with three contract years remaining at $22.5 million, would give Orlando another scorer to team with newly acquired guard Steve Francis.

For the salaries to work in the proposed trade, the Magic would probably need to include veteran center Andrew DeClercq, who makes $2.8 million. Cleveland, Minnesota and Golden State reportedly also have shown interest in Gooden.

The Mavs also have discussed a sign-and-trade deal for Boston center Chris Mihm, a restricted free agent, but the deal appears unlikely because of salaries.

Lattner and Stack can't be traded for awhile, have to wait 90 days until they were traded. Plus, if the Magic want them, they better get new management. Wait, I forgot that should've happened long time ago .

It also looks like Gooden is on the move to the Cavs...

Stackhouse, with Francis and Mobley?? There's only one ball in the court! Not enough for those 3.

There are different restrictions during the offseason. I believe rookies cannot be traded until sometime in December (ie after the season starts).

Well, it looks like this deal fell through, since the Cavs just aquired Gooden for Battie and extras.

Here's the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1845337

It could still go through, but then they'd have to wait 90 days and the whole deal would have to be re-structured with Cleveland involved now.
Cuban & his Mavs will just have to keep trying...

Under the right coach that trio could work well together. Getting Stack would also release some pressure off Dwight Howard and his contract isn't that bad, it's roughly $7mill/yr. Isn't Foyle getting close to that amount?

Stack will make an average of 7.5 million of the next 3 years, but next year is 7 mil. Foyle's contract is different. It goes for another 5 guaranteed years, the 6th is a team option, and his first year starts at around 6 million. The last year, which I doubt the W's will excersize the option, will have him earning 10 million.
