If so, the quote in the first post offers an explanation.

The Pistons pursued Smith the hardest, with agents Brian Dyke and Wallace Prather reaching an agreement with Detroit general manager Joe Dumars on Saturday morning, sources said.

It just offers an explanation how they got him. The bigger question still seems to be why they tried so hard to get him.

that is indeed the real question here. its too bad the hawks didn't trade him at the deadline and get something back in return.

seems like it's a case of "look at all this money we have, let's throw it at the biggest names"
see: Gordon, Ben. Villanueva, Charlie.

Detroit could be the worst offensive team in the NBA next season. I don't like the fit and I hope it doesn't break up Monroe/Drummond.

That is indeed the bigger question, but that's not the question SoF'nAwesome was asking (or at least it didn't appear so, the way it was worded).

My guess is that he's the biggest name they felt they had a legitimate shot at signing. On top of that, he is talented and can do good things for them; it's not as though he's useless and doesn't belong in the NBA. As noted before of course, he does have some key flaws in his game that are going to cause the Pistons (and their fans) some frustration, unless he can curb some of his bad habits.

He was grabbed because he was the biggest name available and because Dumars felt he couldn't afford another 30 win season and third-to-last attendance. He should've waited until next year's off-season, but he wanted to entice fans to get back in the arena and maybe get our wins to the high 30s. I don't see Josh Smith be the catalyst to anything more than that though, as I said.

Ugh, I wish they woulda been able to score Iggy instead of Smith.

I think the worst part of this was losing Calderon, and likely not getting a better PG in the offseason. BK and KCP will do nothing for the offense and most possessions will turn into Moose or Smoove forcing something. Not good.

They'll be beasting some interior D and rebounding though. I look forward to some nice D highlights and the occasional fastbreak / alley-oop highlight. Wins still won't happen tho. :(

Now they are having Sheed as an assistant coach. Threes for Smith maybe?

Hopefully not, that was a problem for him last year. He set career highs for threes made and attempted, at a percentage that was OK but not stellar, which would probably be easier to live with if he didn't fall in love with the three point shot after making one and then proceed to launch two or three more ill-advised attempts. He needs to show more discipline there, not be given encouragement and the green light to fire away from deep...unless of course, he's knocking them down at a better clip.

Pretty much. And just like Boozer, Smith can do some good things that make him a valuable part of a roster. Unfortunately, his game also comes with some cringe-inducing and frustrating flaws.

Chaunce comin back to the Pistons to mentor the kids...i'm lovin it. He and Sheed will teach them all valuable lessons for sure.

Now if the Pistons can just sign Rip to a vet minimum deal and get Big Ben back as strength coach, then I'll be content in my time travel experience. :)

His absence will make it difficult to celebrate any blowout victories.
