Despite a 1998 hiatus, Marv Albert has been the regular television or radio voice of the New York Knicks and or New York Rangers since 1967. The 63-year-old broadcasting legend is ending his association with Madison Square Garden and its cable broadcast outlet.
In a story that was first reported by New York radio talkshow host Mike Francesa, and later by newspapers such as the New York Post, Albert's departure has been described as "amicable" and will be official when his contract expires this summer.
As a story in the Wednesday Post points out, Albert had been earning roughly $ 2 million per season from MSG and was — by a wide margin — its highest-paid employee. And he was apparently negotiating a five-year contract extension when talks broke off.
And The Post, citing unnamed sources close to the situation reported Garden CEO James Dolan as feeling that Albert should be more of a cheerleader for the home teams.
"It was time to go in a different direction; it's that simple," Albert last night told The Post from Los Angeles, home of the Lakers and from where, he said, he's vacationing.
But Albert is rumored to be interested in a play-by-play broadcast position with the Lakers.
Albert has already contacted the YES Network, which televises New Jersey Nets games, about its play-by-play position. However, that job is currently held by Ian Eagle

Looks like this may be the first step in rebuilding the Lakers.
