Ron Artest Wins NBA's Defensive Player Of The Year Award

Mon Apr 19, 2004 10:49 am

ESPN just reported that Ron Artest has just one the Defensive Player Of The Year Award.

It's about time a perimeter defender gets this because I've always thought that on and off-the-ball perimter defense is underrated in this league.

Of yeah...he's close to being suspended for leaving the bench during a Game 1 tiff between Jermaine O'Neal and Brandon Hunter.

I'm happy he won it, and you're right, on and off ball perimeter defense is very underatted, of course the F-C will get more rebounds and blocks than the G-F, but does he stop his man as effectively.

That is something Ron Artest has been able to do, he's been very good and deserved it, but so did guys like Kirilenko, Ben, KG, Ratliff, Trenton Hassell, but Carlisle's research also really showed a lot.

Good for Ron. Going beyond stats, being a small guy, he can shut down just one player, whereas Ben Wallace can dominate a ball game defensively

Ron Artest did get suspendend

Im happy for Ron Artest, when was the last time a non big man won the award? since the Gary Payton 90´s days am I right?

He really did a nice job against Paul Pierce, by shutting him down most of 3 quarters, lets see how game 2 will end with the Celtics star player having it a bit easier in the offense

Pierce has really being going downhill in his shooting the last 2 years. You see I thought his 41.6% FG and 30.2% 3PT was just a fluke and he would bounce back this year.
Then this year it goes down to 40.2% FG, and 29.9% 3PT, and I'm not a Pierce fan but I still want to see the guy do good, kinda dissapointing *his shooting).

I'm happy for Artest, congratulations to him, (Y)

well deserverd award for artest... although i'd give credit to rick carlisle's campaigning of ron artest to be defensive player of the year...

i think you need to take into account that when walker was traded, paul pierce was left as the 1st and 2nd option offense.

celtics have to take advantage of Artests absence. Pierce needs to get his touch going so that he can build up more confidence for Game 3. Also, having to make Artest run through screens and playing a lot of pick and rolls could help the Celts cause to shake Pierce loose.

(off topic)
im not decided on who i want to win between Heat-Hornets. I like heat better but i think Hornets can give Pacers a tougher time. No one on the Pacers can stop B Davis, and they have a solid defensive frontline

Yea I know, but last year Walker was still there and I felt that as a fluke year, so this year I was thinking since Walker left he'd shoot something like 42% at least, guess I was wrong.

I heard Pierce went and got about 8 books on leadership after Antoine left.

Good choice, Artest is definitely deserving of the honour this year. (Y)

Not really. The stats Carlisle and the Pacers circulated showed absolutely nothing because they simply put out Artests stats. They didn't give us anyone elses to compare.

Artest (and the Pacers) can't even top this performance by Bowen (and the Spurs):
Pierce: .286
McGrady: .313
Carter: .375
Anthony: .393
Stojakovic: .407
Ray Allen: .418
Bryant: .420

So I've gotten ROY and DPOY correct upto now. Not too shabby. :D

the x factor here is and the spurs
if players like artest, kirilenko, and marion had twin towers or just tim duncan waiting in the lane like bowen does...

Wed Apr 21, 2004 7:38 am

i'm not saying bowens a better defender (more annoying maybe), but artest does have o'neal. of course o'neal is no duncan and artest is the right choice, but given that fact maybe kirilenko is more impressive with no great defensive big man down low to funnel his guy into.

I think almost everyone did, and Hubie will be coach of the year. :D

Well, "almost" is the key-word in your sentance:

Drama wrote:Defensive Player of the Year

1. Kevin Garnett

Rookie of the Year

1. Carmelo Anthony

Coach of the Year

1. Rick Carlisle

lol well poor Drama then ouch.

What were your other ones, you might have gotten them all right, I think its Antawn Jamison and Randolph left.

Wed Apr 21, 2004 9:23 am

Correct, Jamison & Randolph.

Gooden came in second in 6th man & Murray was 2nd in MIP, although Dampier made a strong case for himself.

Wed Apr 21, 2004 12:14 pm

i'm surprised Kirilenko got so little votes for DPOY, he should have gotten more
