Embiid officially ruled out of 2016 season

76ers center Embiid to miss season following foot surgery

Joel Embiid will have to wait at least one more season to start his NBA career.

Embiid, the injury-riddled Philadelphia 76ers center, is expected to miss the season following a second surgery on his right foot. His recovery should take five to eight months, the same timeframe the center was given following the first surgery last year. The Sixers were cautious with their prized prospect and held him out for the entire season. Team president Sam Hinkie said Wednesday the organization would follow a similar path again.

Embiid had a bone graft Tuesday, with two existing screws replaced and a graft using bone from his hip.

Not unexpected, though they seemed to delay the surgery a few weeks. Best of luck to him, but you can't help feeling his prospects aren't that great at this juncture, with two major surgeries before he's even played an NBA game.

Another year of tanking.

Reports are that Embiid was the delaying party. He was still coming to grips with the prospect of another surgery, another lengthy rehab and another lost season, as he apparently wasn't feeling any pain from that foot. It's not like this delay really matters, he's out for the season regardless.

Anyway, it seems silly to expect a whole lot out of him at this point. Even if he recovers successfully this time, I don't see him ever staying healthy for an entire season. The Sixers need to move forward with Noel and Okafor. Anything positive from Embiid is a bonus, as far as I'm concerned.

Also 2 years removed from basketball activity at most important age when huge improvement is expect is just too much of loss.

Post up plays have become rare these days. Every team turned to guard oriented pick and roll plays. It's just a sad loss when one of the best post up prospect in decades is turning out to be a Greg Oden 2.0 from get go. Al Jefferson remains to be the only high profile traditional post up player in the league.

At this point, it might be unfair to Greg Oden to call him Oden 2.0. At least Oden managed to debut a year after he was drafted, appeared in 61 games, and played fairly well. It remains to be seen whether Embiid will ever play in the NBA.

Then let's call him Bowie 2.0? :)

Even less fitting, seeing as how Bowie had a longer career than Oden.

Len Bias 2.0

I don't know...that was a tragic case that's in a class of its own, since a young man's life was lost due to a bad decision. Even if Embiid never players in the NBA, or never becomes what he could've been because of his injuries or surgeries, he'll still have his life.

So while there are some similarities to other players - Oden in particular - I think the situation with Embiid is kind of unique. His debut is going to be delayed by at least two seasons thanks to two major surgeries, which is not common. I think it might be close to being unprecedented, though I'll stop short of declaring it so because there could be another player that I've forgotten about, but I don't recall anyone else offhand who's missed more than the one season that should've been their rookie year. There's no off-court drama, misfortune, or tragedy involved (a Len Bias situation at worst, a Bobby Hurley situation at the very least). With every setback, Embiid gets closer to a "What If?" story that's not entirely original, but still something quite different to what we've seen before in sports.

Sorry that's the only too class talent that I can think of who was so talented, drafted high but hadn't played a single nba min

This is rough to watch, I'm really rooting for him to succeed since he is such a likable person. Hopefully this is Philly's last year of tanking.

Embiid is the exact opposite of a likeable person for me. The dude needs maturing. Has anyone seen his tweets about Rihanna etc?

It's called humor. You all laugh at Shaq sooo..

Well, sometimes Shaq is more childish and annoying than funny, too. Humour's subjective, and even those with a reputation for being funny can misfire from time to time.

Embiid definitely has been a hard to like guy so far due to silly comments he's made online but I don't necessarily dislike the guy already. He probably could come around as matures. He's been goofy, not douchey. And actions matter more than voice anyway. Like Rondo, you could say wrong things all the time and get hated but actually do lots of good works (charity) behind the scene.

I don't like Joel either.

To many story's of him skipping rehab sessions and clashing with coaching staff last year put me off.

The dude wasn't even playing and still gave the coaching staff headaches.
