Shane Battier

Can someone tell me how good Shane actually is or was...and why isn't he getting much love in the League?

From what I've seen, he's fundamentally sound but not very flashy. Unless your name is Tim Duncan, you're going to be overlooked. Also, he didn't see as much time in his second season - I believe he played almost 10 fewer minutes per game in 2002/2003.

although battier was one of the top college players during his time, college success doesn't always translate into nba success. look at christian laettner and mateen cleaves.... anyways, battier is more suited for coming off the bench and providing a spark with the second unit, like toni kukoc.

I watched Battier alot in his Rookie Season when he was starting often.
He is a very fundamentally sound player, his shooting skills are very nice, he's got a very nice stroke. Very good three-point shooter. He lacks defensive intensity though. I think he was benched for this reason. Hopefully he'll get his starting role back soon .

Are you sure you watched him a lot? As a Religion major at Duke, Battier was known as the Minister of Defense, and earned all kinds of hoopla for his tenacity on the other side of the ball, particularly his willingness to draw the charge. And he certainly hasn't lost his fire after joining the NBA. Coach Hubie Brown, who considers Battier one of his favorite players, just wanted to balance his rotation with consistency from the bench. In fact, here's a Hubie-on-Shane excerpt from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Brown lauded Battier for the defense he played against Ray Allen down the stretch. "You can put Shane on anybody," Brown said.

He always seemed un-interested to me, whenever I saw him play it was as if he was a tad too laid back on defense, but ofcourse that's what I think, I think he could have been much more active on Defense.

OMG... Battier's defense is pretty good... People @ Memphis played him on SG, and are thinking about playing him at PF this season... He's pretty good at D, Jackal.

sure you are entitled to an opinion, but definitely it is a misinformed one. to add to what bouron & tales have said already... battier normally guarded the opposing team's best wing player and sometimes pf's... battier probably is one of the few players not afraid of taking a charge from shaq (he's done it before)

I just feel that he could be more defensively active then what I've seen. Yes, I heard he took a charge from Shaq (ouch) but that doesnt change my opinion on how he plays defense sorry.

besides, if u check his ratings in nba live u'll c he'll get quite high ratings even though his playin time has been limited and if im correct doesnt he have a "lock" symbol too?

Shane is a star... he just doesnt go running his mouth like most, Battier's a great defender and not forgetting a great shooter. As Andrew pointed out he's fundamentally sound which unfortanaly does get overlooked.
