Steroids?

Mon Jun 18, 2007 2:58 pm

I watch ESPN quite a bit. And I'm wondering why I never hear about steroids in NBA but everyday in MLB and NFL?

NBA players mostly use weed.

Extra strength won't turn a roleplayer into a NBA star. The strongest guys in the NBA tend to be the workhorses, w/ exceptions like Shaq.

Just take a look at the physique of Iverson, Carter, Parker, Nash, Nowitzki and you can tell that it's not really about muscle.

Kevin Durant, guaranteed #1/#2 pick, failed to bench press 180 even once. That about says it all.

Mon Jun 18, 2007 3:29 pm

Why would NBA players use steriods? Other then being stronger to bang in the paint, there is no need. Plus if they got too big they would lose their speed and agility.

The NBA is not all about strength. You need to have good balance, have speed, have endurance, have a pain threshold, have good strength, and all of that. In baseball, if you had enough strength to hit a home run every time, you win. That's all you need, strength.

tell all that to Lindsey Hunter. he got suspended for 2 games this year.

And preceeding that, he played his best ball of the year...

A more cynical point of view would be that we haven't heard about it because a scandal hasn't been uncovered yet, but that seems highly unlikely. As others have already said, steroid use doesn't benefit NBA players the same way it does athletes in other sports since muscle mass doesn't grant players an automatic advantage.

And honestly, nobody could probably tell any difference. He was a still a bench roleplayer w/ steroids.

I read an SI article about NBA workouts, apparently one of the strongest guys in the NBA is Matt Harpring.

Seriously, who wants to be Matt Harpring?

Steroids won't help baskettball players much. Centers are the most likely people to benefit from it but the other positions don't reqiure more strength to play better. It won't help shooting (unless you're so weak you can't throw the ball to the hoop) or any other skill because basketball requires more quickness and agility. So, no Barry Bonds of basketball.

 That's probably the closest thing to the truth in this thread.

Well, actually, steroids would largely affect the NBA players. I'm saying this because even if the steroids are mostly known for taking strength, they can also be used to recover form an effort (and it is known of working very well). So it is actually very usefull for NBA players, because they are always tired because of being always on the road and playing all the time. The specialists say that after taking steroids, you can do big efforts without being tired, and also recover very fast. So, I'm not saying that this means that a lot of NBA players take steroids (even if I believe this), but I'm saying that it would be very usefull for them.

Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:36 am

So what you mean is some players take steroids to recover their strength faster after long road trips or injuries?

As we're getting deeper into this discussion, to be clear, Lindsey Hunter was not using steroids, he was using a prescription weight loss pill probably thinking it would help keep in shape. He got the pills from his wife, who does have a legal prescription for it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phentermine

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant of the amphetamine and phenethylamine class.

It is approved as an appetite suppressant to help reduce weight in obese patients when used short-term and combined with exercise, diet, and behavioral modification. It is typically prescribed for individuals who are at increased medical risk because of their weight and works by helping to release certain chemicals in the brain that control appetite.

He was in no way trying to get bigger & bulkier and bench press more. It sounded like he was more interested in losing weight and staying in shape.

He testified he didn't know phentermine was considered illegal by the NBA, and i doubt 90% of the athletes do either, especially if his wife can get it at the local Walgreen's.

There are some good articles explaining why lane agility, sprint speeds, & bench presses are meaningless for drafting rookies, and why Oden & Durant doing so poorly in the tests mean nothing. These same reasons are also why performance drugs aren't going to matter much to the NBA.

Shane Warne (Australian cricketer - let's face it - about the best spin bowler ever), was suspended from international cricket for a year for almost the exact same thing. Except he got the pills from his mum or someone on his speed dial. (Even worse joke)

Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:26 am

spin bowler huh? you guys down under confuse me, i mean, you dribble a football. how the hell do ya do it man, tell me i gotta know

Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:29 am

soccer players dribble a "football". i think they just kick the ball along the ground to themselves, essentially the same way a basketball player moves the ball.

he means real football.. fútbol... not that silly game we Americans call football.

Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:48 am

Ah. yeah, i got that. Dont futbol players in other countries call it "dribbling" though?

(Obligatory on-topic statement: Drugs are bad. NBA players dont need 'em, and so on and so forth.)
