11 foot rim coming to the NBA?

Mon Jun 18, 2007 1:30 pm

Saw this on the news today. Apparently they tested out an 11 foot rim in an exhibition game in seattle today. Personally i dont see how that would help the game, cept that there would be less dunks, and the only ones who could dunk would have to jump really high, or be really tall. On the other hand with players like Yao, he hardly has to jump to dunk.

It's not gonna happen. It was just a test to see what effect an 11-foot rim would have. Otherwise, it's gonna affect the number of dunks, shots made, and total points scored in a negative way.

The NBA loves highlight packages, dunks, promoting Sportscentre Highlights.

Why the fuck would they implement this?

no way this would ever happen. an 11 ft basket is not "real basketball"

They tried this in the 50s to try and curb Mikan's dominance and the idea was quickly scrapped because they discovered the higher rim didn't negate the advantage of taller players at all. I don't think it's going to be that successful in making sweeping positive changes in the professional ranks.

Seriously, what's wrong with teaching young players fundamentals and the right way to play? If a player has an attitude, whether they're a high school kid or a pro, there's an easy solution; bench them, send them a message that they need to fix their attitude. Teach kids the fundamentals when they're learning and growing up with the game. There's no need to keep constantly tinkering with the game.

It's like the whole NBA Playoffs format controversy; the system has worked fine for decades but all of a sudden the results aren't exactly what people want, so the whole thing is horribly flawed and needs fixing immediately, else the whole sport is going down the drain. I don't buy it. I'm not saying change is necessarily a bad thing but I don't buy the fact the game is in need of all these sweeping changes to survive. Not when there's more simple solutions or the matter of chance involved.

something like this would ruin the history of the game if they did it.

I don't see how this exhibition was a success, the leading scorer was a 6' 11" guy.

That's just what the league needs, for the game to come down to a battle of giant lumbering guys with names like Pavel Podkolzin. Big guys will still layup the ball, jump shooters & slashers will be completely screwed over.

Exactly why the experiment was abandoned in George Mikan's time; it just offers more of an advantage to taller players.

Tue Jun 19, 2007 3:44 pm

Why the fuck would they even think about a 11' ring?
:?

Tue Jun 19, 2007 4:17 pm

what the hell, theres nothing that would be improved by a higher ring

Tue Jun 19, 2007 6:23 pm

It would just screw up shots, as the players have to adjust to the higher rim. No way its gonna happen, 10' rim will always be in NBA.

Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:55 pm

There is no way they would introduce an 11 foot ring  Players would have to re-adjust how they shoot and everything.

EDIT: Anthony15 pretty much has the same post as me, us Nuggets fan think alive

Why not an 9ft ring, then alot more of us could dunk (LOL) same affect on the game, though, it would just stuff it up.

Wed Jun 20, 2007 5:33 pm

It's like the players in the NBA are bigger than everyone else who plays bball... they have bigger courts.... 3pt line is further.... now they want a taller rim? americans and their upsizing

Sun Jun 24, 2007 6:28 am

Most NBA players can't even hit a midrange shot. Having an 11 ft. rim will just highlight the lack of fundamentals of the players of today.

lol. thats the funniest idea ive ever heard.

Anyone know where I could get a boxscore for that game?
