Blockbuster trade (Indiana and Golden State)

Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:38 am

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2733891

The Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy, Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod to the Indiana Pacers for Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Josh Powell, NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

I don't know much about these players, but it sounds lopsided in Golden State's favor. Maybe Indy can explain why this trade is a good thing for the Pacers.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:41 am

Holy shit, that came out of nowhere.

I agree. Golden State appears to be the winner here.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:50 am

Whoa.. Harrrington, Jackson, and Sarunas going over to the Warriors? The Warriors definately got the better of this. Murphy was average... and they finally managed to dump Dunleavy. They might miss the presence of Murphy and Diogu inside, but a pretty good trade.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:58 am

Finally Saras will get a good(well,Nellie is even a great)coach. He never managed to play well under Carlisle.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:03 am

Harrington and Jackson are just bad character guys in my opinion. Then again, Murphy and Dunleavy are white, slow, and extremely inconsistent.

Saras backing up Baron Davis is quite a PG tandem, and I hate that Diogu could be stuck behind O'Neal now. Seems like they'd keep O'Neal and Foster on the front line and put Granger in at the 3.

You know Mullin is angry that he had to take on Stephen Jackson just to get Harrington. Can't imagine he would legitimately want him.

I understand why you said Jackson but what did Harrington ever do to warrant bad character?

Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:07 am

Damn, GSW? Well, maybe this aint so bad. Afterall, what could be worse than Carlile as coach?

Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:11 am

Holy shit. I'm dissapointed (as a Pacers fan). I mean, wtf? I hope this is not the end of Pacers trading. Come on, Al + Saras shouldn't have been traded, especially not for slumping Dunleavy and Murphy. Only "good" thing that came is Diogu.

Tinsley, Dunleavy, Granger, Murphy, JO will probaby be the starting five as the season comes along..Only thing i can think of is the Pacers are looking to benefite from this deal in the future with developing Granger, Diogu and JO...

On the other hand, GSW'll have Davis, Monta/Jax, Pietrus/Jax, Al, Biedrins..

Winner IMO is GSW (N)

I don't even know why I said that. For some reason I had it in my head that he gets in some ugly fights every once in a while, but I can't actually think of one. I was probably thinking of JO taking swings at Celtic players on several occasions. My bad.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:22 am

I think Dunleavy will be a pleasant surprise but as of right now it does look to benefit GS more.

GSW :
C - Biedrins.
PF - Harrington.
SF - Richardson.
SG - Jackson.
PG - Davis.

I don't understand it myself. I have a higher opinion of Troy Murphy than you guys, good rebounding and long range shooting are hard to find these days...but it doesn't make sense if they have to lose Al Harrington to get that.

Can't wait to read Indy's response.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:44 am

I don't think it is a bad trade for Indy, Murphy, Dunleavy and mcleod will be good back up and Diogu is the PF of the future.
AH is a good steal for the warriors but Steph Jackson is getting old

Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:45 am

I don't understand why Indy tried to hard to get Harrington, only to give him away in the end. Imo, that was just a waste.

Yeah, I'm pretty sceptical of this trade for that reason. It doesn't make sense to go out and get Harrington again only to trade him for lesser quality players. :?

Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:08 am

Wow, quite shocking, but it will work out more for GSW, Troy and Dunleavy aren't worth Al Jax and Sarunas, not a bad trade tho.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:38 am

I can only assume Indiana is going into "rebuild" mode...and Jermaine O'Neal will be traded next.

Indiana traded away their starters, but kept guys like Danny Granger and David Harrison, both of whom would have fetched them quality players.

Now tank the rest of the season and get the #1 draft pick, draft Greg Oden, and it all works out :P

Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:43 am

Everyone keeps saying 'tank the season to get Oden', but what if Oden decides not to enter the draft? It's a fair possiblity he won't, and then all the teams that 'tanked the season' are screwed. It seems stupid to me to tank a season for a chance to draft Oden.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:01 am

Both teams seemed to got better, Golden State a lil more, but we needed rebounders PERIOD!!! Atleast we got Ike, we tried to get him last year, Keith McCloud might get waived tho!!! I like Dunleavy, Not really a big fan of Troy Murphy!!! Jermaine Oneal will not be traded during the season. . .

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:36 am

This trade certainly came from nowhere, and Golden State definitely gotten the better of the deal. They got rid of Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy's ugly contracts, and got the player they were in the running for in the offseason. Jasikevicius will thrive in Don Nelson's system. On the flip side, Indiana did get Ike Diogu, and Keith McLeod is a solid back up. If Dunleavy plays up to his potential, it could work out for the Pacers.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:44 am

Larry Bird And Walsh Love Ike, They gave up James White, who they wanted, but then got someone they wanted in the Past Draft!!!

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:44 am

This trade is great for the Warriors. Dunleavy and Murphy are horrible defensively, and they have horrid contracts. Murphy is signed for the max, and has no athleticism whatsoever. He can't rebound for shit, and neither of the two could guard a parked car. The Warriors are deficient in rebounding and defense, and with this trade, Harrington and Jackson can help fill in that void. Jackson is a headcase for sure, but I think Nellie is the perfect coach for him. He won't tolerate his antics, either he behaves or he doesn't play. He'll have him shipped out to another team quicker than a heart attack. Just a few days ago it surfaced that he was displeased with Murphy and Dunleavy, and then all the sudden they're both gone.

Sarunas is a good back up for Baron Davis, better than Keith McLeod. Thanks to this trade, the Warriors are unbelievably deep.

Their roster now includes:

Biedrins (MIP candidate)
Harrington
Ellis (MIP candidate)
Jackson
B Davis
Saras
Pietrus
Richardson
Azubuike (has played very well)
Barnes (another MIP candidate)

If these two additions can pan out defensively, the Warriors are definetly a playoff team ( i already thought they were), and not a team someone would want to face in the first round. They're deep and talented at every single position... even Foyle could provide situational defense in the playoffs.

... Indy on the other hand didn't do that well. They gave up a lot of talent and got very little. Murphy is not as good as past season statistics show, and he has no inside game, and is basically a jumpshooter. Dunleavy is the only good player they got out of this trade. I guess it just depends on how well he develops as to whether the Pacers got a horrible deal, or just a semi poor deal. Diogu and Murphy have been injured for a good portion of the season... they might end up getting injured again.

GSW > Indiana

Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:50 am

Jackson and Harrington can fill the void at Rebounding? lol, yeah right, look how the Pacers rebounded all season!! You just have to see how these players adapt to the new Style. . .I didn't want to see Jasikevisius go, cause I liked him, but Rick doesn't play him cause of his defence liablility!! But Pacers are defniately lookin like the Old School Pacers with this Roster now

Thu Jan 18, 2007 9:03 am

Have you watched the Warriors? They're a HORRIBLE rebounding team. Anyone could fill in the void they have. Murphy was a pussy who couldnt rebound for shit, Diogu was injured all the time, and Biedrins can't get them all himself. Al Harrington has more athleticism than any of the players the Pacers got in the trade. I think he'll fit in with the Warriors perfectly. He's shot great from 3, and I think he'll serve sort of like a Shawn Marion type player for the Warriors. He's not as good as Marion, but the Warriors play up tempo, and they need athletic people for their style of play... he'll excel in Golden State. Hell, look at all the MIP candidates they have. I think that's a direct effect of Don Nelson's style fitting the strengths of his players.
