New York Knicks star Stephon Marbury is looking to change the country's "sneaker culture" by introducing his own line of athletic shoes with a price tag of $14.98 per pair.
"Kids shouldn't have to spend so much to feel good about the way they look. When a young kid feels pressure to spend -- or have their parents spend -- $50, $80, $100 or more than $200 on a pair of sneakers, something is wrong. I'm blessed to be in a position to do something about it; to do my part to change the world," Marbury says in a statement.
The Starbury One will be sold exclusively at Steve & Barry's, which is known for its licensed college apparel. It arrives in stores in August.
Marbury will begin wearing his signature shoe on the court next season.
There'll also Starbury-branded athletic performance wear, including jerseys, hoodies, shorts, T-shirts, and a denim jacket and jeans.

Interesting idea though, I'll give him props for that. But I bet he won't even wear his own brand in game.
At least he shouldn't have anymore shoe contract disputes...Well, maybe when he realizes that shoes at $15 won't give you a very large pay check.

This might be good news for NYK fans. The quality of his shoes might result in an injury.
Marbury + Starbury 1 = injury, just like
Grant Hill + Fila = injury, or to an extent
Vince Carter + Puma = injury.

He'll wear his shoes the same way Rasheed 'wears' AF1's.
Sheed definitely isn't wearing those $70 pairs with no cushioning.

It'll be interesting to see what they look like and how they'll perform. I don't have too high hopes at all though, but who knows, it might be just as good of a shoe as the 'Hakeem the Dream' was that he (Hakeem) had them (Spalding) sell for nothing more than 35$..

He actually is, but with a custom made insole. (And they do have cushioning, but its technology is 24 years old though..)

$20 says they'll look like the and 1 quest shoes he wore for 2-3 seasons

I guess he is trying to be the next Shaq except he isn't with Starter

I'll pick them up next time I go there.

I read that the ones he wore are custom made and have the 'air chamber' cushioning system that many Nike's have, but it's just hidden. And my comment on the cushioning was definitely a little exaggeration.

lol...good stuff. I can't imagine one pair lasting more than a game or two on a basketball court. Even payless sells shitty basketball sneakers for more than that.

$20 says you'll have enough money for a pair of the shoes.
Pretty cool idea though. He's not changing the world though
They're just shoes. God damn.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 5:03 pm
wow he's getting his own... tisk tisk.

you mean to tell me Nike can use sweatshops to make 10 dollar sneakers and sell them for 100 bucks, but because Marbury will sell his for 15 bucks his will fall apart in 2 days?

Great idea by Marbs....he probably won't need much marketing either, especially being in NY.

He said he is trying to change the mentality of "having" to buy expensive shoes. I dont think he means cheaper shoes will change the world.

Perhaps he'll finally earn enough money to give that million he promise to the victims of hurricane Katrina.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:30 pm
For starters, he didnt promise anything to anyone. He simply made a statement how he felt about the tragedy. Second of all, you dont know if he didnt give the donation or not...
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:34 pm
Well, he said he'll give the money and we haven't heard about it since. Barkley and KG said the same thing and (reportedly) did it, but not a word about Marbury. Sure, you could sell me the idea that he wanted to do things quietly and with class, but that version has two major holes:
a.) This is Marbury we're talking about.
b.) If he wanted to do things quietly, he wouldn't have had an appearance on a TV and (literaly) cry about it.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:39 pm
It was a press conference for the players union about a different matter, marbury was just asked about it and he opened up, thats not classless. It's not like he set up a press conference just to cry his eyes out for attention.
But its amazing how you are so convinced KG and Barkley donated the money, and Marbury didn't yet there no concrete evidence that any of them did or didnt.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:43 pm
Actually, at first there were KG and Barkley
saying that they will donate the money and after a while there were reports about them actually
doing it - how much money did they give, what was that money used for and who got it. All we got from from Marbury is him crying his soul out about giving tons of money to the poor people of NO.
This anecdote should tell you everything about Starbury's credibility when it comes to walk the talk:
While with the Knicks he is said to have once given a pre-practice pep talk about teamwork only to leave the squad for a massage just as practice began.

Reports arent evidence.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:47 pm
Lol, that statement puts a heavy question mark on 99% of the history we learn in schools.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:49 pm
Alot of what I learnt in history about wars and such were backed up by more than just reports. They were approximates which are two different things... but thats getting way off topic.
Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:56 pm
Getting off topic is our way of doing things.
Psychical evidence only tells you that there were wars and not who started them or basically anything else. In fact, perhaps the historians and archeologs are only tools in the hands of the ideology and are making everything up - including theory and material evidences. Perhaps the whole human history is a fabrication. You see, this is where your way of thinking brings us. I'll trust to the reports and presume that they said they'll do it and they eventually did it, while Marbury stopped after completing the first step (and crying about it).
