Interesting, but not significant.

Bryant's switch is the NBA's most significant jersey number change since the 1994-95 season, when Michael Jordan came out of retirement wearing the No. 45 for the final 22 games of the season.
i think it's significant enough

Bryant will hang up his No. 8 jersey, sources say
Now there's a misleading headline capable of grabbing attention.
Interesting decision if true, I wonder what his motivation might be considering how recognisable his #8 has become and the success he's had wearing it.

More significant than shaq changing from 32 to 34? I dont think so.

My guess its all image related. Kobe has a bad rep and number 8 is an image of him these days.

WHAT!?! NO!!!! Please... no... why Kobe? Why?
#24 is probably one of my least favorite numbers... Why? Kobe... no... :'(
Alright... now that I let it sink in... it's not that bad.
Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:24 pm
Aww who cares? Its jsut a number?
Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:26 pm
I prefer 8. 24 is too close to 23 for my liking.
Another note...
When Shaq changed from 32 to 34 I barely even noticed.

So you have a white one and a yellow one? Damn man... or do you also mean like the old school black/blue ones too? I like the blue one.

I'd say they might become valuable collector's items at some point down the road since they'd be rare if only #24 jerseys are being made and sold.

I actually like the number 24. Mo Pete and Desmond Mason wear it.

Cause they can just re-make a Kobe #8 again.

They can do that for Russell or Mikan Jerseys too, but they still fetch a fair bit.

Considering Kobe is still a Laker, and many associate the #8 with Kobe I think it is. The amount of KO8E we see and #8 this #8 that.. i dunno if its just me, maybe it is, but his jersey number was quiet popular to many fans.

Yeah... what will happen to KB8? KB24 looks stupid...
Plus #8.... 81 points.... 8... 8.... Kobe is #8, I'll always look to him as #8

Interesting point, but i think shaq changing numbers was bigger.. but its never significan.. its just time for a change, just if you change your name on here from amphatoast to the lone ranger or zoro, is it really significant?
it also may have something to do with merchandise. kobe will never be traded, but changing his number will give fans who already have a #8 jersey of him to get a new, #24 one.
Ralph, all nicknames of initials and numbers are pathetic.

Shaq changing number.. well I look around, I see Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Hakeem, Shaq, Kareem, all wearing that 32,33,34 stuff.. really hard to focus on a big man's number, since so many of them use the same numbers (well at least some of the best bigmen... same can be said about guards and the #3)

oh shit.. that is really weird.
despite it being his old number, i really see no point in this.
Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:52 pm
wow....why would he do that.
i always associate #8 with kobe, no more.

Um, im not sure what your point is with that

. And malone has worn number 11, ewing number 6..

TTRYYYYYYYYYING TO COPY MO PETE....just joking, but I find it weird that he is changing his # because he basically made #8 famous.
Bryant began his career at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., wearing No. 24.
Could mean a new fresh start (as in trying to playdifferently an share the ball more).
