Hoiberg retires

Minnesota announces the retirement of Fred Hoiberg, who will join the team's front office.

He's been saying it for a while so it doesnt phase me much. Decent player in his time. I sure wish I was retiring with the kinda money he shouldhave.

not suprised with that heart condition... thoug hhe did have surgery..

It's a shame that he had to walk away from the game that he loved so early. However, he did it for the best interest in his family and I respect his decision. If there was even a slight risk he should have not play and that is what he decided not to do.
Hoiberg is a class act and one hell of a basketball player. The guy would do whatever you wanted him to do and he would do it with passion. He could shoot with the best, play good defense and hustle his butt off for a loose ball. The guy not only played with his heart but also with his head. He was a special player and one was the glue that held that 2003-2004 team together.
The Timberwolves offered him a spot in the front office and he is expected to take it. He will be working with Kevin McHale on player personal, most likely.

I loved this guy's play, shape shooting, defensive vet.
Everytime in the fantasy draft in nbalive I draft him as my backup SG.
With his passion for the game, I wonder what kind of player would he be if he was a little more athletic or taller.

Until there were rumors he'd sign with PHX i hadn't really heard of him. seems like a steve kerr-ish guy to me.

not as good a shooter, but you gotta luv Gansey....let's hope Minny grab him so Riot's life is complete once again

He was only 33. I mean, just barely out of his prime, but I think it was the right decision.

that I did, I luv Mike Gansey too....
one thing though, can you please change Grandmama with Mark Dickel....they were a lethal combo at UNLV....Dickel, the Kiwi PG, led the nation in assists as Marion, a junior JC transfer, ripped it up....

I could make you one with him in it if you'd want, but this was for the sig league and that would have made it too 'underground'. As a junior Dickel played with Marion (who was also a junior) - a JV transfer....shame Marion didn't return for his senior season as with Matrix, Dickel & Kambala, they would've been a pretty solid team....
As a senior Dickel led the NCAA in 99/00 with 9.0apg (I believe he also averaged around 13ppg, 4pg, 1.5spg, etc)....he was an Honorable All-American that year....he probably would've gone to Chicago pre-draft camp, but he had head injury from a pickup bball game. Check the link below:

Due to the injury, he missed all the pre-draft camps, as well as summer camps & training camps, which really hurt his chance of building on a solid NBA career....
all that being said, he definitely had NBA-level talent & speed, but he was probably a bit helter-skelter & wouldn't have lasted long in NBA had he made it....I think if he hadn't of got injured, he would've been a late 2nd Round to undrafted rookie....
after that, I believe he bounced around Europe, Australia & NZ....don't know what he's doing now, probably not too much I'd say....I believe he still plays for the National Team as New Zealand's starting PG & you should see him at the World Championships in Japan this year....
