And the best PG in the league is....

Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:09 pm

Jason Kidd.

He's still the best passer, he's still a v good defender, he still only shoots when necessary and he's still the smartest guy on the court.

He just keeps the ball moving and doesn't overdribble like Nash, and he only takes shots when his team needs them (more often than not making them). That's why he's still the best.

Thoughts?

Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:11 pm

All that is true but you forgot to say he is the bigest threat of a triple double since Oscar Robertson.

Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:15 pm

Well, actually Grant Hill was....until he got injured.

Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:43 pm

Sentimentally I'd have to agree, but judging from the team results the last couple of years, I'd have to say it's Nash. What really works in Steve's favor is that his playing style is a perfect fit for D'Antoni's coaching style in Phoenix, thus adding spectacularly to his numbers.

But as long as Phoenix plays fast-tempo ball and keeps on winning without Stoudemire, Nash is teh premier PG in my book.

Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:57 pm

If only Kidd has a better jumper then he'd be perfect  And a better team record won't hurt as well

Another key thing that Kidd has over Nash is better defense

I actually thought you'd say it was Chauncey when I saw the thread

I look at it like this. Nash isn't any better than he was in his last season in Dallas. The system in PHX just suites him perfectly, but that's no knock against him, he's a great PG in his own right. I'm still inclined to go with Kidd who hurts you on both ends of the court. Nash gives out punishment and receives similar. Kidd makes the stops when necessary and doesn't over shoot the ball.

True. He's a greater leader and teh paradigm point guard. But results make me give the edge to Nash. Maybe if Kidd was on the Suns right now, he'd have a ring and his numbers would be eye-popping. But he isn't, sadly.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:00 am

One could only imagine what Amare would play like, i mean Kidd made K-Mart look good.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:05 am

If Iverson were a true PG, I would say him. But he's not, so probably Kidd.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:15 am

Well we could put it this way. The best 'traditional' PG is Jason Kidd.
The best 'Scoring' PG... well, for me it's Iverson.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:14 am

The homer would have chosen Chauncey Billups.

The smart man would have chosen Jason Kidd.

Nice job, Matt.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:54 am

Though Kidd is the better defender and is playing great ball lately, I'm still gonna have to give it to Steve Nash. The guy just makes brilliant passes and takes the jumper when he can, making himself and the team an offensive firepower.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 6:06 am

i'm going with kidd for this one. i think he's probably the best player when it comes to pushing the ball up court. what's even more impressive though is how he can go 100 mph on a fastbreak and STILL deliver the perfect pass for his teammate (see the game against toronto). on the defensive end of the court, he's still pretty good too. if nash had that in his game, my choice might be different, but then again i don't know.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 6:19 am

I agree cy... Nash has made his entire team better. How many of us really expected people like Boris Diaw and Raja Bell to have such great seasons? Nash commands so much attention by the defense because he is a great 3pt thread and can weave through a slew of players. That gets everyone else on his team wide open shots.

Besides, you couldn't dislike anyone who has patented "the circle play"

Mon Jan 16, 2006 8:35 am

I agree with you Matt, I think Kidd is the best point guard right now. The defense factor gives it away for me.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:02 am

My question is, is Kidd's defense still the same as it is now with his knees not as they were severeal years ago?

The way I see it, the debate is split between the offensive and defensive factors. While it is clear that Nash is more valuable to Phoenix's offense than Kidd is to the Nets, it is also clear that Nash's defense is abmysal. On the other hand, Kidd still provides a great boost to the offense, but his knees downplay his offensive and defensive capabilities.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:10 am

oooh yeah Kidd

Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:44 am

The big factor Nash has over Kidd is that Nash is fully healthy and Kidd had had enough problems with his body to stop most player's careers.

It's amazing he's still probably the best or 2nd best PG in the league while being gimped.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:09 pm

Jason is still the man. Nash is a close second, but defense is half the game.

Just cause the offense suits him better shouldn't mean he he's regarded as any less a player. Because then, who's to say what players offense suits so and so. I know you say that's no knock on him, but I just want to clarify.

I'd definately take Nash over Kidd. Kidd just isn't as a good a scorer, passer, scorer etc than he was in his heydey.

Today all Kidd has on him is defense and even he isn't as good with that today than he has been in his career. He's definately lost a step. He's not consistent with anything anymore. And really, defense isn't as important with the Suns team anyway, because there aim has been to out run and gun you even if it means giving up easy basketballs.

Nash has always been a better scorer and right now IMO he's the MVP again. Look at how good the Suns are and he means so much to them.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 3:35 pm

I know that Kidd is in a decline because of his knee problems, and he's lost a good 1 1/2 steps but i'd still want him running the show for my team (if he wasn't so old that is)

Example, vs Toronto, Kidd grabs the rebound off the FT, not any of the big guys, races up court and sets VC up for the game winner. DEFENSE.

In close games Nash is a liability....example, vs Pistons in last few minutes he was lit up by Chauncey Billups whilst doing nothing significant on the other end.

It's in the final few minutes that Kidd has the decisive advantage.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 3:54 pm

I don't know but definitely Jason Kidd and Steve Nash are the top 2 point guards on the Nba at this moment.

Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:17 pm

i'd say nash, his high pick and roll threat is just plain deadly, and his 3 point range is instrumental to phoenix. at this point and time, jason kidd's defense is based mostly on his reputation.

its funny how suddenly when a team is playing well its "made" for players or its the "perfect system" for the player. give credit where credit is due, nash is what makes phoenix good, you can whine all you want that if so and so were in said situation they'd be the second coming, but the fact remains they arent and all you're doing is whining. there is fact and then there is presumption, get it straight. would kidd be good? sure, i guess so. key word guess. is nash good? no he's fucking great, and i know so.

just because nash only started putting up these numbers in phoenix takes nothing away from him. just like it takes nothing away from a jermaine o'neal or joe johnson or jerry stackhouse or rip hamilton or chauncy billups or ben wallace or vince among others.

and by the way, i dont understand how kidd is more important than nash in the closing minutes. on what clutch insignificant play is this based on? obviously one would rather have kidd on defense in the closing minutes, but i think i would rather have the ball in nash's hand on offense, so to me, it pretty much evens out, and in this stage of their careers id give it to nash.

top 5 pgs right now:
1. nash
2. iverson/wade (if they're considered pgs)
3. chauncy
4. baron
5. kidd

Mon Jan 16, 2006 5:35 pm

Wow, I would never put Baron Davis ahead of Kidd... he's not even in the same tier.

Regrettably, I'll have to agree.
