The Best ORGANIZATIONS in basketball.

What do you think are the best organizations currently in the NBA? I'm not necessarily talking about tradition and history, but about ownership, general manager, coaching, and the ability to be competitive year in and year out.

My top 5 goes something like this...

1. San Antonio Spurs
2. Indiana Pacers (when was the last time they WEREN'T a threat to win the East? Early 90's?)
3. Los Angeles Lakers (a few years ago they'd be #1, but Jerry West is gone and according to Phil Jackson, Mitch Kupchak now drafts players by reading newspaper scouting reports)
4. Sacramento Kings (Geoff Petrie is just that good)
5. Detroit Pistons (mainly because of Joe Dumars)

The Mavericks would be up there, but they didn't re-sign Nash and let a bunch of All-Star caliber guys walk for role-players like Dampier...

Oh, and my BOTTOM three...

28. LA Clippers (by reputation alone)
29. Toronto Raptors (garbage GM)
30. Atlanta Hawks (just garbage everything)

Don't forget the Grizzlies... Jerry West still has the touch...

don't forget the sonics also, this offseason alone, they have proved to be the shittiest and cheapest organization.

I would've put in New Orleans Hornets a year ago, but now they're suddenly doing well. However, they've consistantly thrown away their best players to make more money.
(Alonzo Mourning, Baron Davis....just to name a few.)

going by the last 5 yrs and forecasting future

1. San Antonio Spurs (GM doing wonders, Coach V Good, won 2 Champs, Constant 50+ win team)
2. Detroit Pistons (GM built Champ team in 5yrs, Coaches always good, 1 NBA Championship, 2 time NBA finalists)
3. LA Lakers (3 championships get them here, but largely irrelevant now)
4. Dallas (constant winning but haven't been able to make the finals, falling shy)
5. Indiana (NBA Finals appearance, East Finals appearance too, irrelevant during Isiah Thomas coaching days)

when was the last time they WEREN'T a threat to win the East? Early 90's

actually they finished 8th in East in 02 or 03 i think.

29. GSW surprise? well they haven't done anything but suck last 5 yrs and give Adonal Foyle too much money
30. Hawks- winning is not a term associated with this franchise....still hasn't found a player to build around

We actually didn't make the playoffs in 97, Larry Brown's last year as the coach, then we went on to take the Bulls to 7 games in his first year being gone.

When (Insert name of shitty coach who was formerly a Piston) was our coach, we kind of sucked too, losing in the first round to Boston, Philadelphia and New Jersey. (Although we were the 8 seed against New Jersey and did take them 5 games, and the 5th game went in to double OT, gave them quite a scare.)

29. GSW surprise? well they haven't done anything but suck last 5 yrs and give Adonal Foyle too much money

I would agree with that little blooper with Foyle, and past problems, and GS would be on my list, but since Mullin came (again, with Foyle as the exception), he's doing a good job with Golden State.

so far there's been improvement but they have a long way to go. It all rests on Baron Davis' health i guess.

I think he's made sure to make only good trades after making re-sigining Foyle to a superstar type contract his first move ever as GM. All this time he's just trying to cover it up...or he's insane..

Hmmm .... don't forget Fisher and Murphy's over-inflated contracts... I know I would not give them so much money, they are simply very good role players... But if we're winning, all that becomes second notice, right?

don't forget overpaying for Dunleavy

I think Murphy is a good player. He can give you 20 - 10 from time to time. If he get's less injured, he'll be a very good player. I think he's more than a role player, but not a start yet.

1. Dallas Mavericks - Mark Cuban has shown more of a commitment to winning than anyone else in the entire league... good coach in Avery Johnson too.

2. San Antonio Spurs... great coach, fan base, winners almost every year....

3. Sacramento Kings... no championships, but competitive every year but this one.. and probably the best fans in the league...

4. Detroit Pistons

5. Indiana Pacers

WORST....

Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors (but i do think they have pieces in place, so that will probably change by next year)

Knicks have had some bad couple years in the 2000s. Pretty much since 2001, but a lot of teams have had a lot more losing seasons. Cavs, Nuggets, Nets, Kings, Mavs, Warriors and more teams I'm sure were horrible throught the 90s when NY never failed to make the Playoffs.

We're focusing on the organization, regardless of whether teams had success in the winning column or not. The Knicks are all about profit, and they don't give a shit if they win or not, as long as they can make money.

i think top organizations based on what egarret said are: sacarmento, san antonio, dallas, indiana, detroit

the worst: la clippers, golden state warriors, new orleans, atlanta, toronto

Despite missing the playoffs, the Clippers havent been totally hopeless we've just didnt have the extra edge(Sam I Am edge?)to make it and I guess Sterling did fuck us(fans)up but still we remained a decent team.

Spurs, Pistons, and Pacers. It's no coincedence that those three play the most fundamental basketball in the NBA.

There's a contradiction. If we don't take tradition and history into account, then we shouldn't take in "the ability to be competitive year in and year out" into account either.

I want people to consider the ability of the people currently running each organization, and how successful and competitive those people have been. Not how many championships the Celtics won in the 1960's etc.

Ah, that's more clear, then. I still stand by my choices of organizations, including the Knicks.
