i seen an article in foxsports about ricky davis missing a layup on purpose to get a triple double what actually happened and why was it so bad?

it was against the jazz a couple years ago

Davis' time with Cleveland was marked by disputes with then head coach Paul Silas and he quickly grew a reputation as a selfish showboater. A prime example occured in 2003 when, in an attempt once to record his first career triple double, Davis shot at his opponent's basket with five seconds left in a game. The Cavaliers had a 25 point lead at the time, and Davis even admitted he shot at the wrong basket intending to miss so that he could collect his 10th rebound of the game. Davis was subjected to widespread criticism and his negative reputation reached a new level.

I wouldn't say I'd do the same in his situation, but I kind of understand it coming from him.. not only he is known as the Isaiah Rider type of player (the ones I absolutely love - Spree, Ricky Davis, Artest more or less) he also must've been extremely depressed back then.

It was the season in the year -1 B.L. and he was playing like his life depended on it while the rest of that Cavs team absolutely sucked, one of the worst teams ever, definately the worst I've seen games of (this year's Knicks are close j/k).
Then while he played that hard and put up good numbers, the media kept saying they were just tanking the season to get Lebron. I'd get sick of that too..

Ricky giving headaches + media critising him for no good reason = things like these.

I wouldn't done the same thing. I remember some player hitting Davis REALLY hard after his attempt.

All the owners, front office, and media obsess about player stats, all the big headlines are "TRIPLE DOUBLE" or "XXX SCORES 40" and that's been forced fed to these kids from the time they were in grade school, and they're surprised someone tries to run up his stats when his team is up by 25?

The drug pushers are criticizing kids for taking drugs.

If Foxsports want to criticize someone, they should look at their own damn sports broadcasts. When's the last time a hard pick setting up an open jump shot made their highlight reel?

Ricky Davis is a product of the sports media environment. He's 3 pointers and flashy dunks and no defense, and he's just giving people what they ask for.

A player on my 8th grade team did the exact same thing.

Well, they didn't really take away the rebound, Deshawn Stevenson more or less took away Ricky Davis with a HARD foul. Jerry Sloan said he was proud of Stevenson for making that foul though.

I believe that's his point. It will never make the highlight reel, but it's the reason a play happens; the reason the shot takes place. Without the hard pick that was practiced time and time again, there is no game winning shot, but as far as the media is concerned, no such pick existed. It was just the hero hitting the shot, as if the other 9 guys weren't even on the court.

It's kind of bad sportsmanship though, shooting at your own goal just to pad your stats. More to the point, it seemed to serve as evidence he was more interested in his own goals than those of the team. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but Sura at least did it at the offensive end.

There was only five seconds left in the game, he couldn't have done it at the offensive end.

The guy who tried to knock him the fuck out was DeShawn Stevenson I believe. I think Davis has really turned himself around in Boston though, he's become a strong offensive threat and there hasn't been a peep from him lately.

If I remember it correctly Sura was gonna go on a streak it woud have been his second triple double. But since the ball never even hit the rim, he was not awarded the rebounded... the rationale of this is that a rebound is when you go for a missed FG attempt.. since we know he did not take the shot to make it, he was not awarded the rebound.

Going back now to the subject of the thread... w/c is Ricky Davis, not Ricky Davis' foolishness


I would have loved for him to have stayed in cleveland ang played alongside lebron... instantly they would become one of the most atheletic back courts of all-time (exaggerate, exaggerate)

Hughes is ok, but foolishness or not, I think ricky davis has far more potential than hughes is.
