Paul Pierce: Kobe has nothing on me!

Sun Nov 06, 2005 12:00 am

On WEEI today Paul said he thinks he is the best at his position. "Kobe has nothing over me on the court except the rings on his finger. He was lucky to play with the one of the best big men ever"

Paul is a great player and all...but WTF is he smoking?

Sun Nov 06, 2005 12:54 am

Haha, Kobe was lucky  At least he's confident about himself :?

Kobe is a better player than him but he's right on the dot when he says Kobe was lucky to have Shaq, if Pierce had TD or KG he would have rings on his fingers too. But he isnt a better player than Kobe by any means, he could have been a better defender but he slacked off on trying and improving his D long time ago.

He's better than Kobe at getting those.

Those are big if's. I don't think Kobe was exactly lucky to have Shaq. West built that team.

I can just see a Kobe hater come in and say....

It doesnt matter if West built it or not...its not like Jerry played for the team Shaq did, things are alot easier when you have a huge 300 pound monster down low....I mean do you think Kobe is going to win titles with say Brad Miller?

Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:29 am

And I use to like Pierce coz I thought he was humble

Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:30 am

Miami had that 300 pound monster last year and didn't win. Kobe is still better than Pierce and I don't think Pierce would've won 3 rings with Shaq.

Maybe not three but he would have won a ring. There's a big difference between the Shaq that played last year and the one that was playing with Kobe.

Plus Miami didnt do too badly did they, if they didnt make the playoffs or got knocked out in Round 1 you could have made a point but they didnt. You saw how well the Lakers did last year?, Kobe is great Im not taking that away from him but you cant win titles without someone with presence in the key and someone like Shaq makes a big difference, hes pretty much won with whatever team he's played on.

Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:49 am

Kobe was lucky to play with Shaq, but Shaq should be lucky to have played with Kobe aswell. This thing has been discussed over and over, but the fact remains that Kobe never won without Shaq, and Shaq never won without Kobe.

Oh and by the way, I rather have Kobe on my team then Pierce.

Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:54 am

Maybe not three but he would have won a ring.

We don't know that. There's a great chance he might, but since it didn't happen...

My point is that Kobe wasn't exaclty "lucky", as Pierce said. Both Kobe and Shaq had to adjust to their styles and made each other games easy.

Sun Nov 06, 2005 2:19 am

Last year Kobe was on his first season as him being "the man". And he only played in 68 games last year due to injury.

No Shit Sherlock.

Drex - I guess your right about adjusting the game styles, anyway Ive made enough posts in this thread already.

Pierce has recently been portrayed as a player who has attitude problems, and saying stuff like this isn't really helping much....

Sun Nov 06, 2005 2:34 am

Obviously Kobe is the better player of the two but..

This is true, but Kobe wouldn't have won without Shaq, yet Shaq would probably have won with any other Kobe-like player (T-Mac, Pierce, VC in his Raptors-prime, etc. ..Trevor Ariza) not even necessarily one at Kobe's level but something like an all-star swingman.

ps. I don't really mind remarks from players like these, for me they make the NBA more interesting as Kobe will probably go harder at Pierce and vice versa. And we have something to discuss on here. :)

Sun Nov 06, 2005 2:36 am

Peirce is good but not as good as Kobe. Problem with Kobe is hes a ballhog and Peirce isnt. Peirce is underrated and Kobe is well hes normally rated.

Sun Nov 06, 2005 2:49 am

"Recently" has an attitude problem? :)

I don't know about Kobe having "nothing" on Pierce, but they're not that different...Kobe is certainly not miles ahead. Kobe's big numbers comes from the fact he plays a ton of minutes, takes more shots, and forces more shots (and ends up coughing up more turnovers).

Last year:
Kobe: 40.7 minutes - 27.6 ppg - 4.09 TOs
Pierce: 36.1 minutes - 21.6 ppg - 2.80 TOs

If Pierce played more minutes it would look like
Pierce: 40.7 minutes - 24.3 ppg - 3.15 TOs

At the same playing time,
- Kobe makes 1 more 3 pointer (or 1 & 1/2 shots) than Pierce
- Kobe coughs up the ball 1 more time
- Kobe is less accurate, he shoots at 43% while Pierce is 46%.

But Kobe has a slam dunk trophy and Pierce never will lol

But thats like saying that Kobe would probably win a championship with any other dominant bigman like Garnett, Duncan, Stoudemire etc. I dont like the word "probably" in these situations. "Maybe" would be the better choice Imo. I remain with the facts, Shaq has never won anything without Kobe and Kobe has never won anything without Shaq, we will never know what would happen if the 2000 Shaq would play with another Star guard.

There is a reason why he didnt play 40.7 minutes.
No Shit Sherlock.

Well for some people its not that obvious. Paul Pierce is one of them.

Even if Pierce had an attitude problem throughout his career, it hasn't really shown a great deal or as much as now.

I like Pierce as a player, but hopefully he's not going to continue to say such things.

Sun Nov 06, 2005 3:25 am

Pierce can't match Kobe's clutchness, or his ability to absolutely lock down on D.
