Celtics guard Allen charged with aggravated battery
CHICAGO -- Boston Celtics guard Tony Allen has been charged with aggravated battery stemming from a fight that escalated into a shooting outside a West Loop diner this summer, a police spokeswoman said Friday.
Allen was in custody Friday morning and was to appear for a bond hearing on the felony charge in the afternoon, said Officer Laura Kubiak.
Allen's attorney, Michael Zaslavsky, said Allen has been in jail since Wednesday, when he voluntarily went to a Chicago police station to meet with investigators.
He said Allen is not considered a suspect in the shooting.
One man was wounded Aug. 29 when gunfire erupted during a fight at the White Palace Grill about 3:30 a.m., police said. Marktwain Johnson, 29, was shot in the left arm and left side.
Allen, a Chicago native and former Big 12 player of the year, was a standout at Oklahoma State. He was drafted by the Celtics (25th overall) in 2004 and started 34 games as a rookie last season, averaging 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds.
Allen, who had a small piece of cartilage removed from his right knee in September, has not played with the team this year, Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said.
