Who do u think is better (Version 2)

Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:06 am

Well I'm going to continue Shauncx9's theme about who is better, but i got a way closer match up.

Who is better?

Shaq

or

Tim Duncan

Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:31 am

Hard to compare. Really different players. But I'd go with Duncan just because he's younger and can play both PF and C

Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:36 am

I THINK THAT BOTH ARE THE TYPE OF PLAYERS WHO CAN BE CONFERENCE FINALS, OR FINALS BOUNDED WITH A GOOD SUPPORTING CAST...BUT IF THEY PLAY ONE ON ONE I DON'T THINK THAT DUNCAN WOULD HAVE A CHANCE...I RESPECT DUNCAN AND I THINK THAT HIS SPURS ARE SOMEHOW THE (80s) CELTICS OF THE MILLENIUM AND IF THEY HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF STABILITY ON THEIR SUPPORTING CAST QUALITY I THINK THAT THEY CAN BE THE TEAM OF THE DECATE...IF NOT I THINK THAT WE SHOULD SEE A REPLAY OF THE 70s WHEN 7 TEAMS WON THE 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE DECATE...THERE ARE MANY GOOD TEAMS (LIKE SHAQ's HEAT) BUT DUNCAN MAKES HIS SPURS STABLE THROUGH THE YEARS...AS A LAKERS FAN I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT IS THE TRUTH TO ME :?

Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:40 am

 That's actually a hard one, because it's more subjective than it looks.

Ahh.. I need time to think because I don't want to say "tie" when there's two options...

K, I decided on Duncan. While he's not the offensive powerhouse that is Shaq, I find that Duncan makes very smart decisions on both offense and defense (not saying that Shaq doesn't, but TD has grasped extremely solid fundamentals that most players don't have) that I can give Pops credit for. Just his presence makes his teammates better (double team kickout, defensive positioning, rebound positioning), just a great player. Of course, this is all debatable, so debate away.

Edit: Oh, Shaq can't shoot. :P

Well, i think the choice here is obvious, Duncan.
When we discuss who is the top NBA players, Duncan and KG always have been coming #1 and #2 and shaq for the most part is 3 or 4.
Duncan can hit free throws better than shaq.
Shaq has been a little injury prone each year
Duncan is in his prime, Shaq is on the decline and probably done in 5 years
He has more range that shaq shooting wise.

See for the most part, what Shaq can do Duncan can do just in other ways. He doesn't over power you but he will hit that shot off the backboard. He is a proven winner with 3 rings, a leader as shown in game 7.

5 years ago this would of easily been shaq but he is a step slower right now. Still a good player but Duncan has that small edge overhim right now pretty much because Duncan has reached the prime of his career.

Garnett>Duncan>Shaq

:D

This is a tough match-up... In terms of power and low post moves, nothing can stand against Big Daddy Shaq Diesel! When it comes to playing straight up scientific basketball and versatility, Big Fundamentals Duncan is in...

Shaq (in his prime) or Duncan (in his prime)?

Each one of them has his own strengths and weakness, the most important
thing is the ability to gel up with any team, leadership, and the right attitude in winning games.

Duncan is the best player in the league right now. In Shaq's prime, I would've given it to him, but now that he's older, Duncan has surpassed him. It's very close though, both great players.

Wed Aug 24, 2005 12:22 pm

not to say that duncan isnt unique but he has KG rite on him and they are like equals as far as abilities(i favor KG but thats jus me).

but as far as anyone in the league that has no equal that can not be stopped i gotta go with shaq. even though lakers lost horribly in the finals of 2004 he was still puttin up huge numbers against the best defensive team in the league. im not basing my whole arguement on that but he jus can not be stopped.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 4:17 am

I was actually basing my answer on both players in their primes, not comparing them present day. I see a lot of players picking Duncan over Shaq which is obvious these days since Shaq is getting older, but it'd be interesting to see people's reaction for Shaq in his prime vs. Duncan in his prime.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 4:21 am

I still don't get why anyone would pick Duncan in his prime over Shaq but awell...

Duncan is the best player in the league right now.

I can't agree with that... I don't want to get into a discussion about it because you'd inevitebly beat me, but even still. I'd take Garnett over Duncan in a heartbeat. Put him on that San Antonio team and they still would've won the championship.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 5:02 am

Tim Duncan, absolutely...
Even if I love the way Shaq plays. He's still a great player but TD did better...
Maybe we should start a thread that compares Garnett with Duncan.
(I still think that TD is better)

Thu Aug 25, 2005 5:34 am

duncan or garnett is a joke, and a bad one at that. duncan in a fourth of a heartbeat. garnett could make a living being duncans butler during the playoffs.

duncan right now obviously, duncan in his prime vs shaq in his prime? dont know you couldnt depend on shaq late game...... shaqs interior d was inconsistent......... but shaq was dominant. i dont know. pick your sugar.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 5:56 am

i think it was 2yrs back, spurs vs lakers in the playoffs, in LAL, game 5 or something. it was the 1st time i had seen duncan so agressive, he was bringing it. ignored double teams, went directly at shaq, just went bonkers.. bill walton probably wet his pants watching duncan playing the way big men should play.. "throw it down, big man"

it's a close call between the 2 i say.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 6:00 am

2001 Shaq easily over any TD

but current Duncan over current Shaq

And I'd take KG over TD

just give KG TD"s teammates and TD KG's..

Thu Aug 25, 2005 6:37 am

Remember this, Duncan was the player that got Shaq motivated for the 2000 season because prior in the 1999 Western Conference Playoffs, Shaq said he was going to guard Duncan in the final game(which resulted in a SAS sweep over LAL) and Duncan made Shaq look bad. Though two years later,in 2001, Shaq got his revenge against Duncan and Co. and got back at them in 2003, though in 2004 I blame the Spurs' perimeter players for the Spurs not winning another title. Duncan or Shaq you can't lose but I'd take Duncan simply because he is the solidifier and a more consistent defender and rebounder than Shaq, Shaq played lazy over his career in those regards but on offense in the post for 2000-2002 seasons he was the man, though Duncan snapped in a losing effort against the Lakers in the 2002 playoffs rematch. Man that was a good rivalry. Oh well time to make a new one.

The better player would be Duncan. He's great offensively & defensively. Not that Shaq isn't but Duncan seems motivated all the time. Shaq doesn't. Shaq is like that genius in the class who stops working his best because he knows no one else can be better than him even if they tried. Duncan on the other hand is not the genius, but is the smart student who keeps on working.

In terms of dominance & personal bias, I'd take a motivated Shaq any day.

It's a very very close call. It just comes down to preference I suppose.

Timmy.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 8:36 am

i hate these kind of threads...

Thu Aug 25, 2005 8:41 am

Not To go off Subject but..............

KOBE BRYANT!!

Thu Aug 25, 2005 8:53 am

Oh go fuck yourself will you.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:12 am

Why do always Kobe Bryant fans say that Kobe is the best even if he's not in the thread subject?? Neither MJ was so...............PRESENT, and he was, sure of hell, a lot better than Kobe.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:15 am

He is!!!!!
Look at MJ at Kobes Age...Kobe is better at his age!!

Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:20 am

Except not.

Thu Aug 25, 2005 9:59 am

Shaq and Duncan, it's like comparing a Ferrari and a Lamborghini.
They're both amazing player, so very hard to put one ahead of the other.
