The Hawks are expected to offer restricted free agent, Joe Johnson, a maximum contract on July 22nd.
The Suns have repeatedly said they will match all offers for Johnson, but that could just be grandstanding.
If the Hawks sign J.J. to a max offer sheet, many believe they'll wind up getting him

This is waaaaaay to much for JJ
Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:30 am
why?
WTF!!!!
Oh, lets draft Josh Childress and Josh Smith, then we'll draft Marvin Williams the next year and oh yeah, we still have al harrington.............Hawks are dumb
they shud be chasing Swift.
What are they gonna play Harrington,Smith or Williams at centre??
Spastics!
Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:31 am
they need a pg lmao wut losers
Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:33 am
They'll be doing some traing around, that's for sure. harrington will probably be the first to go. Be patient.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:42 am
Yeah, Harrington is in some trade talk with NY to get Marbury...
Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:50 am
is JJ allowed to turn down the offer, IF he wanted??
Sat Jul 09, 2005 1:03 am

that is ludricrous....max for JJ....he's nice, but that's all....he ain't no Larry Hughes, that's for sure....he's a nice player who doesn't deserve max, just like Kenyon Martin shouldn't have got it, and Zach Randolph shouldn't have gotten it....
ahh well, Hawks seem desperate....although they've got Childress at the 2....seems strange....realGM seems a bit unreal at the mo....
Sat Jul 09, 2005 1:15 am
Wow.. the Hawks are stupid.
Max for Joe Johnson? Why not offer that to Larry Hughes?
Sat Jul 09, 2005 1:25 am
Yes he cna decline, you're not forced to go anywhere except your own team that is if they match an offer.
Joe Johnson is far from being a max player, he's a good player, a possible All-Star, but not a max player
Sat Jul 09, 2005 1:44 am
Well maybe the Hawks actually want to win now and get some quality players. Face it, players get inflated contracts all the time. You need to do that for free agency. I doubt Phoenix will match this, since they'll be filled with max contracts.

Actually they aren't, Isaiah Thomas got MAD when reporters asked him about where he's going to trade Marbury to, he said he has no plans trading Marbury whatsoever.
So I don't really know what ATL is doing here. A maximum contract maybe have very bad influence on JJ. He might think he has reached stardom, get cocky and decline like eg. Allan Houston, minus the injuries (he was on the decline before that).

Joe Johnson can play the 1, and has when Nash sits on PHX.
Check this line-up. Though Undersized, would be interesting to see how it plays out.
1 - JJ 2 - Chilly 3 - Marv 4 - Smoove 5 - Al
Sat Jul 09, 2005 3:07 am
that's a little too much for JJ. They should spend there money on more roleplayers or someone who deserves that max contract
Sat Jul 09, 2005 3:12 am
1 - JJ 2 - Chilly 3 - Marv 4 - Smoove 5 - Al
That lineup would get eaten alive.

I am not really sure, but I do believe that if JJ signs the hawks' offer sheet, then he has to go to Atlanta unless the Suns match the offer.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 4:41 am
i think the hawks should look more into PGs and Cs, not SGs or SFs. The team right now is too small. I'm sure JJ will deserve that contract in a few years, but not right now.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 4:44 am
Good thing the Grizzlies got rid of that stupid GM that the Hawks have now
I really don't get what they are trying to do, but I guess they want to be deep at the G/F spot
They may just have Johnson playing a little PG and going with a big lineup or something.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 5:08 am
So, they have Al, Donta, two Joshes, Marvin plus Diaw to play SF(/SG). You have to admit that that's they're certainly deep at the swingman position

. OK, Marvin, Josh Smith and Al can all play PF, but not in this league. At least not for a contender.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 7:58 am
^^Meaning they can for Atlanta.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 8:07 am
Max for JJ is ridiculous...I won't say he's overated but sure will be over-paid!
Sat Jul 09, 2005 8:18 am
lmao, some teams will just pay anyone anything. maybe the hawks have thier eye on some 13 year old kid they think will turn into a basketball god, so they fiquere they will just sign average players to max deals to ensure they stay in the basement for many years to come, giving them a better chance to draft that young bastard.

Joe Johnson can play the 1 as a backup, or in short spurts, but he's far away from being a PG. He can give them 20-5-5 if he's playing about 42-44 MPG, but he'l likely give them something like 19-4-4.
Would I pay $9-10 million for 19-4-4? Definately not.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 9:28 am
Hehe, they should try playing Boris at center again, now wasn't that a fun game.
Sat Jul 09, 2005 10:06 am
Hawks has no clue of what they are doing. Their rosters has way too many SG and SF. They should be aftering C and PG.
