The NBA Finals Breakdown
The NBA final between the Detroit Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs was a final most people did not want to see. Most fans hoped to see the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns competing for the championship, winners of their respective conferences and two of the most exciting teams in the league. However, it was not to be as the defensive teams prevailed. Games one and two where anything but expected as the Spurs handled the Pistons easily. Everyone started to write off the Pistons heading into game three. As they have occasionally done before, Detroit pulled it off and won at home. No one had any idea how badly the Spurs would play in game four. The Pistons crushed the Spurs at the Palace of Auburn Hills, winning by 31 points. Manu Ginobili was one player who many fans considered “Missing in Action.” He and his team just didn’t show up in games three or four. Ginobili was once considered to be the MVP of the Finals of the Spurs early on, but the fans wondered if he would show up the next game. Game five was one of the most entertaining games of the series. Robert Horry stole the game as he scored all his 21 points in the final 17 minutes. He proved the importance of veteran leadership and made a nice dunk that really rallied the Spurs as they won a thriller in overtime by a score of 96-95. Both teams played really well and it came down to the last seconds of the extra period. With the NBA Title in sight most people favoured the Spurs to win game six as the series headed back to San Antonio. But once again, the Pistons proved that they are much better than people give them credit for. Detroit won game six and forced a game seven even though the spurs have lost only three games on home court in the entire playoffs.

It was the first time in 11 years that a NBA final has gone 7 games. The last time was in 1994 when the Houston Rockets prevailed over the New York Knicks. The Detroit Pistons were the underdog again, as a poll showed 322 people thought the Spurs would win, compared to only 22 people supporting the Pistons to win. Game seven was a low scoring game, but it was still very exciting. Throughout most of the game neither team head big lead and for most of the game the lead was only one or two points. Detroit’s biggest lead came at the 7:30 mark of the third quarter as they had a 48-39 margin. Tim Duncan, who had been criticized of late for not being a leader on the court, took charge as the Spurs came back to tie the Pistons. Manu Ginobili also had a huge game, playing much better basketball than games 3 and 4. He drove to the basket more often which is what we are used to see from him. The energetic Argentinean finished the game with 23 points. Brent Barry also was a huge factor for the Spurs off the bench as he finished with 11 points and Bruce Bowen made a huge block for the spurs in the final minutes of the second half. Robert Horry comes off the bench and contributes with 15 points in 32 minutes of action. The Pistons however made it a game as Rip Hamilton had a team high 15 points. Chauncey Billups (Former Toronto Raptor) played 40 minutes and had 13 points. However, it wasn’t enough as the San Antonio Spurs prevailed and become the 2004/2005 NBA CHAMPIONS, beating the Pistons 81-74. The MVP of the finals is Tim Duncan who had a game high 25 points in 42 minutes. Duncan deserves the MVP because of his leadership on the court and his responsibility off the court. At the post game media scrum after San Antonio got hammered 102-71 in game four of the series, Duncan claimed responsibly, Duncan claimed responsibility stating, “I am the leader of the Spurs and that it starts with me.” Overall it was a great NBA Finals and San Antonio strangely enough won the finals on a full moon.
