NBA all no-defense team

Tue May 17, 2005 5:07 pm

Check out this Charlie Rosen article it's pretty funny. Amoung other things is this:

The NBA's No-Defense team — Eric Piatkowski, Keith Van Horn, Carmelo Anthony, Mike Dunleavy, Vin Baker, Slava Medvedenko, Wang Zhizhi, Sam Cassell, Rodney Rogers, Zach Randolph, and Peja Stojakovic.

The Pete Maravich trophy for the No-Defense Player of the Year goes to … LeBron James.

Steve Nash should be in there somewhere...

add JO to the list of "out of high school" players who play D

Tue May 17, 2005 6:24 pm

I personally don't place much stock in Rosen's take since his assessment of Dominique Wilkins and Patrick Ewing a while back.

Wow there seems to be a lot of hurt feelings here. Just to be clear he never said that a player drafted out of high school could never play defense he just said that LBJ couldn't and that an excuse for that was lack of playing against men and/or professionals.

Anyway I thought it was a good read and thought he was right on about LBJ but just to be fair anyone who thinks LBJ is a good defender please post a game where he shut down a star scorer or even kept said star below his season average. You know kinda like Bruce Bowen, Tayshaun Prince, Kobe Bryant or Ron Artest does.

Tue May 17, 2005 10:59 pm

actually I don't care about all the players listed there. just wanted to add someone on the chicochu's list :P

he did say something about most high school player's tendency to not play D though but he didn't say that it's the same for all of them.

hehe. yea i know lbj is not the best defender in the league. but can you say steve nash plays better d than lbj? or..melo? or...walker? or .... arroyo(sp?)

plain stupid to say just because he cant be a defensive stopper = no defense player of the year.

btw, he has 2.2spg and .65bpg. they're not jaw dropping numbers, but at least he's good with passing lanes. muahahha

if he was 1spg or sth then yea i'd agree. but at least he does something

Well about all the players in that list are bad defenders. Peja has improved though. Lebron shouldn't get the award for best non-defender, he's not a good defender, but he's not close to being the worst, unless he meant worst out of all superstar guards/forwards or something [which he didn't], but even then, Lebron is not the worst.

Also no Nash? He's always been a staple on the no defense lists...

Wed May 18, 2005 10:18 am

Sam Cassell is the worst defender in the world.

Wed May 18, 2005 11:05 am

As bad as he is, Rick Brunson is pretty bad too, Brunson is just so unathletic, it's not really his fault, but he was blessed with just the minimal athletic ability to be a pro basketball player.

Steals is not an indicator of man to man defense. It is an indicator of how much that player gambles on defense.

I think he gave James the Pistol Pete award because he's a super star.

Wheres Chucky Atkins?

Wed May 18, 2005 3:18 pm

keith van horn isn't doing any defense now....since he has a broken ankle

Kobe? How does he belong on that list.

Thu May 19, 2005 8:28 am

I think Kobe was on the All NBA Defensive First Team a few years back.

Fri May 20, 2005 6:53 am

I understand that may be true, but why list him with the top defenders in the league based on just that?

Fri May 20, 2005 12:20 pm

Based on just that? The man can shut down opposing players, like T-Mac, when he wants or needs to.

T-mac in 2004 ring a bell? He was off to another 50+ point game and Phil let Kobe defend him and he kept him to something like three points in the next quarter.

Sat May 21, 2005 2:53 am

Er...isn't being on the NBA All-Defensive team a pretty good indicator that someone plays good defense?

Even beyond that, just watch him play and he's a dominant one-on-one defender, mainly due to his leaping, quickness & height for his position. He's probably not the best help defender or zone defender. I think he's full of himself, but i can't deny his amazing athleticism.

The article is rather stupid...the reason LBJ and many superstars don't play Tyson Chandler 1 foul per 15 second defense is because they need to play 40+ minutes a game in order for their team to win. If LBJ had the luxury of playing on a team like Dallas or Phoenix where any number of people could step for him, i'm sure he could go town on opposing SFs. As it is, if he just gets into foul trouble, Cavs lose end of story.

Earlier in the year Wade got into this same problem, he goes for a lot of blocks as a guard and got into foul trouble...he ended up fouling out of the game with Detroit, end result Detroit wins. Lesson learned.
