Something wrong with the All-Star Balloting?

Tue Dec 21, 2004 8:32 am

I know mostly the NBA All-Star Game is based on mostly of popularity, and for proof, look at Yao Ming, since his rookie season, he's been in the asg, well he's been in all the time, 2 years, and is about to go again this year, but think about it, if LAL gaurd, Chucky Atkins, had a breakout season, he'd be in the asg right, no, b/c he's not popular around the NBA, that's the way i see it, and this is just wrong, Kobe Bryant and T-Mac, battling it out for the spot of the 2 gaurd. And T-Mac's leading. Come on now. Look.
http://www.nba.com/news/allstar_041216.html

Up by like 7,000 votes, omg  Kobe is leading the NBA in scoring, has not 1, not 2 , not even 3, but 4 TRIPLE-DOUBLES, his team's record is like 13-8 i think, but compared to t-mac, points, 27.7 kobe, 22.5, t-mac, 4 trip-dub's for KB8 none, for t-mac, lakers, 13-10 , rockets, 11-13, come on, KB* has avg. 7 boards a game and T-mac , i have no idea, but this is just getting out of control, I know it's only the beginning of the season, but still, damn, this is just like the SUns, and SOnics, neither will make the finals, i bet anything. but still, this is just out of control. Yet T-Mac has a " superstar " ( idk how ) on his team, Yao MIng, for u slow people, Jim Jackson, and all these other people, and yet Kobe has L.O., please. I'm a t-mac and kobe fan, hell i love all the nba players, but it should be fair for some players, and this just is really stupid.

but all in all, it's still a popularity contest... the players that deserve to be on the team get put on as reserves by the coaches. I remember a few years ago, Gary Payton was legitimately the best PG in the league and fans vote in Steve Francis in because he can dunk and is a ballhog, so that's what they wanna see. and it kinda helped that he was on Yao Ming's team too.

Tue Dec 21, 2004 8:52 am

The starting lineups are chosen by fans so its mostly by popularity.

Tue Dec 21, 2004 9:41 am

Yeah, everyone knows its a popularity contest and its not gonna change cause the league wants to make money!

Tue Dec 21, 2004 1:20 pm

Stop whining about it. Kobe's a great player, we all know that. Some may say he's Top 5 in the league and T-Mac is not. But Kobe right now doesn't have a very good reputation (and the media doesn't help him), and a lot of people doesn't like him. Anyway, he will be in the ASG, as a starter, or as a reserve.

He WILL be starting.. i think Donte was just bitching that he is getting less votes than T-mac...

They will start at G.

I found really funny the Chucky Atkins in the ASG comment

Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:23 am

Even if Chucky Atkins had a breakout season, he still wouldn't be good enough for the all-star game. :P

Well that's my fault. But I realy like both of them, but it doesnt matter now, idk who will be starting , I'm honestly the biggest kobe fan out there, so that's why i was " BITCHING " but, it's aiight. Last year on nba.com when they had the vote for best sg, kobe got 100%, no one was voted, they had t-mac at small-forward , so that may be on eof the problems. So KObe will start at SG, and T-Mac, SF. So nevermind.

Wed Dec 22, 2004 5:05 am

tmac and kobe can both start

No they won't. Kobe will start at G ang McGrady will also start at G. Duncan and Garnett will start at F and F and finally Yao will start at C.

Duh?

OK then , if that's the starting lineup, what about Steve NAsh, or Tony PArker, think about that.
DUh?

Wed Dec 22, 2004 5:55 am

Humph, before using the duh, understand the meaning of it.

The All-Star starting lineup works like this:

Whoever gets the most votes = starters. Capiche till there? Yay.

Now the starters aren't seen as PF-SF-SG-PG, the starters are seen as F-F-G-G, since it is a popularity contest. You can't have Duncan sitting when he has more votes compared to say someone like Nash. Nopes, he's got more votes = priority. He starts. Oh noes, KG also has alot of votes, oh noes, they plays the same position? Oh what shall thou do? I know. Start him too! Oh my? Is that allowed? Two PF's? Oh my indeed. Oh my ass. If the all NBA team can be in the C-F-F-G-G format, this should also be allowed since we get to decide.

Alright, on with the lesson. Nash & Parker will take a seat behind McGrady & Bryant because they are both listed at the guard spots. (If I'm not mistaken that is.) They have more votes compared to Nash & Parker. Which makes them starters, who cares if none of the two are PG's? Nopes, not us. We just wanna see a competitive game between the best of the best. (Well, most popular of the lot.)

Anywho's, you expect them to bench Garnett for Nash? Because that's basically what you said. If you imagine Bryant starting at SG and McGrady at SF that would mean Garnett (or Duncan) would be seated. Duncan would be starting at PF and Yao at C. So...bench Garnett for Nash? Nopes. Won't happen.

Lineup will be as follows (according to votes atleast)

C- Yao
F- Duncan
F- Garnett
G- McGrady
G- Bryant

Nash
Allen
Etc Etc.

East will be:

C- O'Neal
F- Hill
F- Carter
G- James
G- Iverson

As silly as it is, that's the way it works.

Those guys have the most votes in their respective categories. (Centers, Forwards and Guards, not Centers, Power Forwards, Small Forwards, Shooting Guards & Point Guards.)

Duh.

Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:23 am

Carter definately doesn't deserve in. Brad Miller deserves it more than Yao.

James should be put as a Foward, not a Guard.

I don't like it either. I'd like Mike Bibby to make on All Star Game. At least the reserves will deserve to be on the team. Butof the 10 that do have the most right now, I only think Carter and O'Neal don't deserve it. I don't think it's fair to compare T-Mac to Kobe either. Kobe's the only scoring option on LA. T-Mac has Yao. Houston is two games back of the Lakers. I think Amare Stoudamire, Rashard Lewis, and Shawn Marion all are worthy of All Star spots.

Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:31 am

Kobe's the only scoring option on LA. T-Mac has Yao

WOW....T-Mac has Yao

Wed Dec 22, 2004 8:12 am

What part of "popularity contest" is difficult to comprehend? It's not about deserving, it's about popularity.

Wed Dec 22, 2004 8:56 am

So Odom vanished in the air?

pretty much, I guess.

I wrote in Rafer Alston for the ASG. It will never happen, but I can hope...
I also voted for Artest.

And Odom's a dominant scorer?

Thu Dec 23, 2004 3:31 am

funny thing about this voting due to C-F-F-G-G foramt was in west they will gonna start 2 Power forward while on east they will start 2 small forward.

But we can do nothing about this all-star voting. i remeber someone said that let the coach pick the starters and let the fans vote for the bench players. can we get a different results....

Thu Dec 23, 2004 7:01 pm

With a few exceptions, most of the top players are selected to the team and the starters are almost always among the NBA's elite. Consider the current projected starting lineups. Shaq is the best centre in the East and while his numbers aren't quite up to his career line, he's starting to get rolling after the slow start. Similarly, LeBron and AI are among the top players in the East. All of the projected starters for the West are among the best in the league - Yao is currently the best centre in the West. Most of the time, the most popular players are also the league's finest.

Carter and Hill might not be the best the East have to offer in the frontcourt, but Carter (when healthy) is the kind of player that can thrive in an All-Star game and Hill is a sentimental pick. Since All-Star games are for the fans, it makes sense to allow the fans to have a say in who will definitely be named to the squad. While some players do get snubbed, most of the players that become All-Stars are deserving of the honour.

As far as Kobe's concerned, the accusations (in terms of the trial and those of a former teammate and head coach) have hurt his popularity as well as the Lakers' record so far this season. Many fans who usually would have voted for him despite having no real fondness or dislike for him have likely been turned away. He deserves to be at the All-Star game but his image has suffered this past year, so it's no mystery that some fans are less than enthusiastic about "rewarding" him.

Thu Dec 23, 2004 11:50 pm

And Odom's a dominant scorer?

He's capable of scoring, we all know that. Is Yao dominant?

Fri Dec 24, 2004 10:36 am

He certainly can be a lot more dominating than Odom.

And Andrew, Yao hasn't played like the best Center in the West. He's definately capable of a lot more than he's done this season.

Fri Dec 24, 2004 12:46 pm

Andrew... i read an article on Kobe band it points out a real good point. How the hell did all of his troubles which must have tarnished his reputation ALOT... and hesa still getting 6th most votes in voting??? And Im still amazed his averages are up to 27,7,7,1 and 1.... and he only shooting 40% from the field,.. imagine if he sank 45-50% of his FG...

*drools like Homer*
