One man's injury is another man's opportunity. While most NBA teams with a mild interest in acquiring the Raptors' Vince Carter have taken a wait-and-see approach to his Achilles injury, the New York Knicks are salivating over a possible steal.

According to league sources, Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas remains as intent as ever on acquiring Carter, healthy or unhealthy.

And if the current circumstances have scared off Thomas' rivals around the league, that suits him just fine.

"When Isiah wants something, he wants something," a source said. "And he wants Vince Carter in New York. If Vince's injury gives Isiah a bit of an exclusive window to negotiate, watch out."

Fuelling the speculation is the blunt truth that both the Raptors and the Knicks are in rather desperate straits.

The Raptors have lost six games in a row to drop to 7-15, and they'll play host to Shaquille O'Neal and the Miami Heat today. Carter will miss a minimum of the next four games after being placed on the injured list with a strained left Achilles tendon.

The Knicks have a record of 9-10, which, of course, means only one thing: First place in the Atlantic Division! Still, sub-.500 basketball doesn't sit well in the Big Apple, and as Thomas proved with his acquisition of Stephon Marbury last season, no move is too bold for the ex-Raptors GM.

If published reports have been close to correct, the Knicks have been offering quite a collection of garbage in their efforts to pry Carter free over the past few weeks. Just about every mediocre and inappropriately high-salaried Knick has been on the table, but a couple of the names that have popped up recently are slightly more intriguing.

Word out of New York yesterday suggested the Knicks might be willing to part with centre Nazr Mohammed, and if that indeed is the case, it puts a new spin on the possibility of a Carter deal getting done. Mohammed had been thought to be virtually untouchable, as are Marbury and Jamal Crawford.

And sources indicated the Raptors kept a very close eye on Knicks guard Allan Houston when he played his first game of the season on Friday against the Washington Wizards. Houston, who is coming off a knee injury, didn't set the world on fire, but he didn't look horrible as he scored eight points in 19 minutes.

Houston's contract, of course, does look horrible. He has three years, including this one, to run on his pact, at annual salaries of $17.5 million US, $19 million and almost $21 million (gasp!).

You think that's bad? The Knicks' Tim Thomas also has been mentioned in the rumours, and for a player of his modest accomplishments, his contract numbers should come with a PG-14 rating. He's earning almost $13 million this season and will get almost $14 million next season.

The Raptors now presumably will steer clear of Penny Hardaway (thank goodness), since he has a partial tear in one of the tendons in his right hamstring. And if the Raptors want to re-acquire Toronto fan favourite Jerome (Junk Yard Dog) Williams, let's hope it's for the proper competitive reasons, and not exclusively to throw their beleaguered fans a bone, as it were.

Raptors GM Rob Babcock has been trying to package Carter with Jalen Rose and his hefty pact, but there were some rumours percolating in Florida yesterday regarding Rose and Eddie Jones of the Miami Heat. If the Raptors ever traded Rose in a separate transaction, that certainly would increase their flexibility as it pertains to moving Carter.

Be that as it may, can the reeling Raptors afford to wait anymore? Has the occasion to be choosy long since passed?

No matter how Babcock answers those questions, almost all the vultures circling the Raptors at this moment are wearing blue-and-orange Knicks jerseys.
