SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) -- Commissioner David Stern wants the NBA to send some of its players to the minor league.
Stern proposed expanding the National Basketball Development League from its current six- or seven-team structure to 15 franchises, allowing each NBA team to farm out one young player on its roster.
``... If a team has a player below a certain age that it thinks would benefit from playing a lot, assigning the contract of that player to an affiliated team would be a good idea because we have young men playing four minutes instead of 40,'' Stern said Wednesday.
Speaking at an impromptu news conference prior to the NBA Draft Lottery, Stern noted the idea needs the approval of the NBA Players Association.
Union spokesman Dan Wasserman did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
The NBA's current labor agreement with its players expires after next season.
Stern planned to discuss his idea with the union.

If Darko is still part of Detroit, but he's in that league, can the Pistons sign someone in his spot?

I would also assume that a team could sign another player after sending someone to the NBDL, but they'd have to waive a player when calling someone up from the NBDL.

Anyway there is this system in many sports such as soccer where you have team 1 and team 2 and even one for the real young players. The teams can just pick in their other team whoever and whenever they want.

It would sort of be how teams can leave international players to play in their international leagues till they actually need them. Not bad, but 15? Will that be enough? There are enough sucky players out there.![]()

Once you got drafted by a NBA team you cannot return/go to the NCAA, also...if this was possible, then there still would be tons of players left in the league who already played a maximum of 4 years in college and wont be able to return.
Also, yes...people see college as a development before going to the NBA, but because some player did good in college that doesnt mean he will be in the NBA, thats the whole idea for this
