Winners and losers after the trade deadline

Fri Feb 20, 2004 11:39 am

Which team(s) was(were) the biggest winner(s) of the trade deadline? Which teams(s) was(were) the biggest loser(s) of the trade deadline?

IMO the team that got to rent Wallace for the stretch run was the biggest winner.

Your thoughts?

Fri Feb 20, 2004 12:46 pm

Well the teams that got the biggest win was the Pistons because this does help them contend to go to the Finals this year and gives them a strong frontcourt which kinda helps them to contend in the West (maybe). Orlando was another winner because I think Stevenson has alot of potential and is a good defender as well. Boston was a loser because they got rid of their starting PG James. There is nothing to say about the Hawks, but on TNT Barkley was right about the Hawks shouldve just kept Sheed til the end of the year, because they would have the cap or could still deal him with a sign and trade cuz he would be very valuable in the off-season.

biggest winners --- pistons, blazers

pistons get wallace and suddenly are title contenders

blazers get 'reef, theo ratliff (leads league in bpg) ... both players will contribute heavily on offense and defense ... and they also have D Miles (lot better than mckinnis) .... blazers will probably make the playoffs

biggest losers --- atlanta, phoenix

we all know that kobe aint goin to atlanta ... in fact, he aint goin nowhere ... he's stayin put with the lakers -- no doubt about that. he would be really stupid if he went somewhere else. so whats the best chance atlanta has???? the rookie draft??? maybe they'll wait for 2005's free agents.

phoenix gets rid of starbury and hardaway to save some cap space. then what do they do??? trade 2 first round draft picks to utah??? now why on earth would you be so stupid to do that??? you're tryin to rebuild .... and you have the worst record in the west ... and basically you're trading away your 1st round draft picks. What if they get #1 pick??? phoenix will be down in that hole for years to come.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:41 pm

phoenix will be down in that hole for years to come.

Amare and The Matrix could get them out  .

Im sure one of those picks was from new york, and chances are nyk will be in the playoffs so theres no way that could be the number 1 overall. as for the other pick.. i dunno. Keon Clark, Shawn Marion and Amare isnt that bad of a frontcourt.. and Joe Johnson and barbosa is a decent young backcourt... maybe they feel they can develop these guys into winners? Or maybe you are right, they dont have a clue...

Fri Feb 20, 2004 3:46 pm

yeah i agree with what you guys are saying. and i can see now why they traded their first round picks. well, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out for them.

but hey, we can always talk about teams improving. however, there is always going to be a team that will be doing bad. we can have suggestions for every team but not everyone can be a winner!

I like what Boston did, they're aren't expceting anything big this year anymore, so they got rid of Mike James to give Jiri and Banks the time at the point, this would also move Ricky to the starting 3 spot.

i agree boston got rid of mills who wasn't really contributing and james who was easily replaced by Chucky Atkins and Lindsey hunter, boston didn't lose but they didn't gain a whole lot.

Atlanta have gotten screwed over. They have lost ratliff and raef for wallace and they lost wallce for crap! All thats left on Atlanta's team is Jason terry who is now the carrier of that team!

I don't get it, yes I get the sarcasm, but are you angry that he's starting or are you stating that it is irrelevant and you don't care. I aslo don't know if him starting is good or bad for the team but we'll see.

Anyways, yea they also unloaded Mills contract, Lindsey Hunter isn't really a good addition, I remember him on the Raps last year and all he did was launch shots like a maniac.

Winners - Detroit, Orlando, Utah, Atlanta

Losers - Phoenix

Still don't know - Boston

Winners of the "zero hour" deals: Detroit, Utah

The Pistons are the big winners of the final flurry of trades, trading away Rebraca and Sura for Sheed and Mike James. Utah managed to swap Stevenson for Giricek.

Winners of all the recent deals: Detroit, Portland, Utah, New York

Detroit and Utah: See above. Portland's deals have all been pretty good, while New York's roster looks much, much better than it did at the start of the season (except for Houston's injury).

Losers of all the recent deals: Atlanta, Phoenix

Even though it seems to be their mission to dismantle the previous rebuilding plan and start over, the Hawks have clearly been on the losing ends of the deals they've made. If they can't achieve what they want after shedding so much talent, the deals will look even worse.

Phoenix is also gambling with potential cap space and player development. Unlike Atlanta they still have a few good building blocks, but they've given up more talent than the other teams they've made deals with.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 8:01 pm

i say that the jazz win on the giricek deal but go .500 on the gugliotta deal like they got rid of 2 bad knees clark and handlogten but get a past prime player

the hawks should not have got wallace at all they either should have kept him or not got him from the jail blazers at all the pistons win out of the teams that participated in trades

thats my opinon

Fri Feb 20, 2004 10:55 pm

What has Atlanta thinking! Is their GM a gambler or what?? Whatif they don't get kobe bryant hell their team would be worse than an nbl or cba team..

an article wrote:Phoenix will give up the least favorable of its two first-round picks in the 2004 NBA Draft, either its own or New York’s selection, which was acquired from the Knicks in a trade on Jan. 5. The second conditional first-round pick was also acquired from New York and is protected through 2010.

Agreed, getting rid of james wasn't too bad because they sure as hell are not trying to win this year, just one more pick for the collection. They can either package all 3 and move way up, which ainge talked about, if they do bad enough (they currently are 7th worst in the league) they could package thier other 2 firsts and move up. All in all, you can rebuild a team through free agency or the draft. With the baker situation looming over the celts, they decided to build through the draft. I do like that james is gone, he was a good player, but the celts need banks to develup, and this will give RD more time too....

If by good defender you mean horrible, and if by potential you mean he'll be an average wing someday, I agree.
i agree boston got rid of mills who wasn't really contributing

But his fat contract came off the books...especially since he'll never play again...
and james who was easily replaced by Chucky Atkins

Ha. I hope you like Chucky.
The Pistons are the big winners of the final flurry of trades, trading away Rebraca and Sura for Sheed and Mike James.

I like to say "Chucky Atkins for Rashweed, Mike James and the Eastern Conference Championship" because Sura and Zelly were gone after this year anyway.
i say that the jazz win on the giricek deal but go .500 on the gugliotta deal like they got rid of 2 bad knees clark and handlogten but get a past prime player

Givesupalotta comes off the books this season, so they dumped two broken big men for capspace.
What has Atlanta thinking! Is their GM a gambler or what?? Whatif they don't get kobe bryant hell their team would be worse than an nbl or cba team..

I doubt they're even going after Bryant. The team was already horrible, new management is dumping the old and starting over. I like it.

Oh aiight, I didn't see the Ricky pic in his avater, well thats good then :D

i think detroits the winner
loser: philly for not making any deals. they are just delaying the inevitable

i don't see how phoenix is the loser out of this. ownership is very cost conscious and decided to rebuild.

i'm still not sure what ainge is doing in boston
