Sheed is being moved again

DETROIT -- Rasheed Wallace moved to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team trade Thursday after playing only one game for the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta acquired Wallace from Portland last week.

In a deal put together shortly before Thursday's NBA trading deadline, the Pistons sent center Zeljko Rebraca, guard Bob Sura and a first-round draft pick to the Hawks. That pick will come from Milwaukee this year if the Bucks make the playoffs.

Detroit also sent guards Lindsey Hunter and Chucky Atkins, its first round pick this year and cash to Boston, while the Celtics shipped Chris Mills to the Hawks.

The Pistons received guard Mike James from the Celtics.

Portland sent Wallace and reserve Wesley Person to Atlanta on Feb. 9 for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Theo Ratliff and Dan Dickau.

The Pistons figure Wallace, who's averaging 17.1 points and 6.6 rebounds, can provide frontcourt help for the playoffs. They had the best record in the East last season but were swept by the New Jersey Nets in the conference finals.

Under first-year coach Larry Brown, Detroit is 34-22 and in second place in the Central Division.

In his eighth NBA season, Wallace's contract and turbulent history made him a prime trade candidate this season. He's in the final year of a contract that pays him $17 million this season.

Wallace was called for a league-record 41 technical fouls in the 2000-01 season. Last season, he and teammate Damon Stoudamire were cited in Washington state on marijuana charges while returning from a game in Seattle.

Then the NBA suspended Wallace for seven games for threatening an official on an arena loading dock after a home game. That was the longest NBA suspension for something that didn't involve physical contact or substance abuse.

If Detroit makes a run at the finals Wallace may stay,Artest is injured and Indiana is going to fall in the standings so Pistons have a perfect shot at the #1 seed, would you leave a first seeded team?

Fri Feb 20, 2004 7:28 am

Yeah, New York fans are a bit worried now that he might stay in Detriot. They aren't a bad team like the Hawks who are going nowhere. If Detriot reaches the NBA finals, I wouldn't be surpised if he stays there so they can have anther run next year. I know if Detriot wins it all he will more than likely stay to win anther one.

let's not forget this trade opened up most likely enough cap to sign okur

Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i actually hace a tear in my eye right now im that happy

Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace in the paint

one thing though, its kinda creepy......when i played NBA Live 2000 franchise mode i had done a bunch of deals. One of them saw Cliff Robinson on the team........that happened, Corliss Williamson was on my team and then in reality and now Sheed. This is kinda bad for my NBA Live franchise cos now i'm 100% sure i'll win with Sheed doin 10+ dunks a game

 PISTONS!!!!!!!!

Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:19 pm

Those 2 Wallace's in the paint could be a nightmare for the rest of the East Conference :P :D . Anybody think that they could matchup with some Western teams??

Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:53 pm

So much for that masterful "reubuilding plan" joe dumars had which meant look to the future and not take carmelo. Imagine the ballclub they'd actually have now if they had drafted anthony?
I still like indiana in the east, but detroit has moved ahead of new orleans in my mind as the number 2 team in the east. And yes I think they can compete with the bigger teams out west now.. they'd probably be the best in the nba if they had carmelo right now instead of darko..

And it will be interesting this offseason to see where sheed goes..

I dunno, a skilled 7'0 guy who is still growing and developing going to a top team isn't anything dissapointing. Everyone knew Darko was a project though, so no one was expecting immediate production.

The Detroit management had an interview with a radio station in Detroit Monday and were asked if they could go back in the draft would they take Melo, and they said no because they wanted Darko. Many teams, even Denver who got Melo were still trying to get Darko after the draft. They said that they didn't need immediate help so they didn't want to pass on a 7'0 that could dominate in time. Melo would be a guy that will give you numbers but Darko in 3 years will take over the league. They also said a guy like this comes around not so often, a guy like Melo you can get in the next draft, or a few drafts from now if you have a high pick.

He even outlined their plan, year 1 Darko plays hardly any minutes, year 2 he becomes a guy that gets some minutes of the bench, year 3 he explodes and become and high impact player for the team.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 3:31 pm

Well of course they arent going to say they would rather have melo now when they still have darko sitting on their bench. But, this trade was for the present, and Carmelo would be able to help immediately.
Also there is no guarantee that Darko will take over the league or even end up better than Carmelo... so they took a player who is no where near as good as anthony now.. and quite possibly never will be. Carmelo is no where near his prime yet either.

It would be like the Wizards comming out and saying they would still take Kwame over Pau Gasol right now, becuase in 2 years kwame will take over the league. It's possible, but not likely.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 6:25 pm

And which numbers do you see Darko averaging in year 3, fgrep15?

Fri Feb 20, 2004 7:06 pm

I think we can safely assume Atlanta isn't aiming for an incredible final run and a surprise playoff appearance. Atlanta continues to overhaul their roster (with an eye to further changes in the near future), Detroit gets the best of the deal talent-wise, and Boston trades away their starting point guard (anyone know why?).

I can't believe how much player movement we've seen this season.

I was confused at first too... But thein it made sense to me... They are givin' more minutes to Banks, and also putting Ricky Davis on the starting 5... He already played great tonight...

Fri Feb 20, 2004 7:33 pm

Who's starting at point guard for Boston now? Pierce or Welsch? :?

Fri Feb 20, 2004 7:45 pm

Welsch is starting at the point, I like him there, Welsch is a good player, I'm happy they got rid of banks b/c it allow Welsch to play point, Banks to get more min, and Ricky to start.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 7:55 pm

But maybe Atkins or hunter will start for the celts? Probably not. Hopefully Banks starts. (Y)

In other news... Keon Clark to Suns!! :D yay! Anyone know when Keon will be back from injury? most articles say that it's unkown... but articles last year said he should be back around mid february... so... yeah...

lets take a look at some new lineups!

Suns-
C- Keon
PF- Amare
SF- Marion
SG- Johnson
PG- Barbosa

Pistons-
C- Okur
PF- B. Wallace
SF- R. Wallace
SG- R. Hamilton
PG- C. Billups

Celtics-
C- Mihm or Blount
PF- Blount or McCartny
SF- Pierce or Ricky or maybe Welcsh?
SG- Ricky or Pierce or maybe Welsch?
PG- Banks or Atkins or Welcsh or Hunter? Hopefully Banks. (Y)

Wow celts are a hard one...

Utah-
C- Ostertag
PF- Ruffin
SF- Kirilenko
SG- Giricek
PG- Arroyo

Magic-
C- Pachulia or Hunter
Pf- Howard
SF- McGrady (or stevenson?)
SG- Stevenson (or mcgrady?)
PG- Lue/Strickland

Hawks- ( This has to be the worst NBA team in the league)
C- Zelly or Prysbilla (or however you spell it)
PF- Alan Henderson
SF- S. Jackson
SG- Diaw or Glover or Sura?
PG- Terry

hehe actually a few months ago in my Suns franchise i traded for keon and played him at center. :o

Fri Feb 20, 2004 9:49 pm

lets see, if Pistons drafted Carmelo i wonder what the team would look like. Prince or Williamson would have to go. The Pistons cap situation would look different cos Melo is getting paid more than Prince so re-signing Okur could pose a bigger problem.

Lets see Pistons now have

C Okur
PF B Wallace
SF R Wallace
SG Hamilton
PG Billups

Prince
Williamson
James
Campbell
Fowlkes
Ham
Milicic

the starting lineup might not occur, Okur might be benched. It's Larry Browns dilemma now, expect Joe D to sign somebody soon.....a guard most likely.

Fri Feb 20, 2004 11:18 pm

Oh man, i hope they sign Buford. (Y)

Sat Feb 21, 2004 12:20 am

OMG look at this Hawks roster...I can't remember seeing a more worse roster in the last years...

1999 Bulls.
the starting lineup might not occur, Okur might be benched.

That will never happen. They can't bench Okur if they want to resign him. Wallace gets to play SF or come off the bench, his choice.
Celtics-
C- Mihm or Blount
PF- Blount or McCartny
SF- Pierce or Ricky or maybe Welcsh?
SG- Ricky or Pierce or maybe Welsch?
PG- Banks or Atkins or Welcsh or Hunter? Hopefully Banks.

C- Blount
F- Mihm
F- Pierce
G- Davis
G- Banks
would be best...though I'd personally put Welsch back at SF and still use Davis off the bench...and apparently the Celtics are waiving Hunter...
Well of course they arent going to say they would rather have melo now when they still have darko sitting on their bench.

They said it after the draft, before the draft, forevah. Brown wanted Melo (after calling Jared Jeffries the best player in the draft last season) and Willie Robinson and Joe Dumars told him no, it's Darko. Robinson has seen every player to be drafted in the last 40 years and he almost had a heart attack over Darko when he worked out. I trust him.
So much for that masterful "reubuilding plan" joe dumars had which meant look to the future and not take carmelo. Imagine the ballclub they'd actually have now if they had drafted anthony?

Rashweed Wallace > Carmelo Anthony. Anthony spends the whole season playing 8-12 minutes off the bench behind Prince AND Williamson, then they get Wallace pushing Prince to the bench and Anthony's minutes completely disappear.
they'd probably be the best in the nba if they had carmelo right now instead of darko..

Best in the NBA? Best in teh NBA??? Ha! They wouldn't be best in the NBA with Carmelo AND LeBron AND Darko. Pluck Carmelo off Denver, stick on the Pistons bench behind Prince and Williamson, add Rashweed, stir, and you don't have a team that's better than Sacramento. Hell, it's not even better than Minnesota, Dallas or a healthy Los Angeles. It beats San Antonio at every position but one and Tim Duncan is better than all five Pistons starters combined.

Anyway, who cares about Rent-A-Sheed. So they add him for the rest of the season and go to the Finals. Big deal. The Pistons traded Chucky Atkins for Mike James. Brilliant. Atkins is gone, forevah. Good riddance. Next year Delfino comes in and Sura maybe comes back. Darko affixes Elden Campbell's fat butt to the bench. Best of all, there's Mike James instead of Chucky Atkins. Offensively, Mike James is Chucky without the stupidity. Defensively, Mike James is a stopper, and he's like Tim Duncan to Chucky's Pau Gasol with two broken legs.

Poor Boston, wasting almost $7 million on Chucky. They better hope Charlotte takes him. Walter McCarty would run the point better.

Alright, maybe not. I'm just a little biased against Chucky.

Sat Feb 21, 2004 10:15 am

wow  Suns have some great talent there...no one in the starting five is over 30...they have a good chance next year if they could just lose now and get a high draft pick

Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:54 pm

Dude, there's nobody over 25 in their starting 5.

Sat Feb 21, 2004 2:50 pm

With a lineup of:
Ben Wallace
Rasheed Wallace
Carmelo Anthony
Richard Hamilton
Chauncey Billups
Then off the bench bring In Okur at backup centre, Corliss backup power forward, Tayshaun at the sf, and James and Fowlkes as the guards.. i think that lineup could challenge for the title, and at the very least would be better than what they have now.

Sat Feb 21, 2004 2:52 pm

EDIT:
Then off the bench bring In Okur at backup centre, Corliss backup power forward, Tayshaun at the sf, and James and Fowlkes as the guards..

Fowlkes can't play guard, Corliss can't play Power Forward...
Ben wrote:They can't bench Okur if they want to resign him.

Bah, it doesn't matter, the Pistons are going out in the first round this year and will be a lottery team next year. They've run their course...
