DETROIT -- On the eve of his federal perjury trial, Sacramento Kings forward Chris Webber pleaded guilty Monday to a lesser charge of criminal contempt in a deal that is expected to allow him to avoid prison time.
Webber
Webber had been charged with lying to a grand jury about money authorities say he received from former Michigan basketball booster Ed Martin. He could have faced up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
During Monday's hearing, the former Michigan player admitted that in 1994 he gave Martin about $38,000 in cash as repayment for past expenditures the former booster made on his behalf.
"I'm relieved that it is in the process of being over,'' Webber said after the hearing.
In the agreement with prosecutors, Webber will face a fine.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that NBA players who plead guilty to any crime, even a misdemeanor, place themselves at risk for a league suspension, generally served at the start of the season.
A ruling from the league on Webber, Stein reports, is unlikely until after U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds decides whether the criminal contempt charge is a felony or a misdemanor.
Sentencing was set for Sept. 16.

Man he's so guilty. He's just lucky Ed Martin died and all the evidence was thrown out the window. Honestly, ALL the other players involved admitted to being guilty already. I couldn't understand why he had to lie in front of that jury and why he didn't just face up to it and bite the bullet like the rest of them. The most they got was a fine, a slap on the wrist and some community work i think. Chris Webber's a retard (although a very lucky one with Tyra Banks
