Expansion teams

Postby Swoosh on Sun Jun 15, 2003 9:05 pm

I was kinda wondering, how does this work? How is charlotte gonna get some good players, cuz just the draft and free agents(who i think arent that enthousiastic of going to a whole new team if they have a chance with a contender or are already with a title contender) wont get them a top team. Of curz i could have looked with the wnba when miami sol and stuff were coming in the wnba but i didnt so...

I'n pretty sure Charlotte get to draft players from other taems... all 29 teams are allowed to protect 8 players that cannot be taken by charlotte... but that's all i know...
I'd like to know more about this too actually...

There'll be an Expansion Draft, giving Charlotte the option to draft players from the other 29 teams. As Nick said, the other teams will be able to protect 8 players - Charlotte will only be allowed to pick one player from each team.

I'm not sure how many picks Charlotte will be given - I'd imagine somewhere between 8 and 12, depending on how generous the league wants to be.

yeah ok,so its quite logical they wont immediately get a big name or something, but hell who they gonna get? Maybe portland can finally ditch stoudamire :D ,ironically, i think the rapters selected him when they were an expansion team, dont they? And in the normal draft will they automattically get an top five pick or something?

From this year i know, this is lebron-draft :p, but will join the league in the 2004-2005 season(dont they?) so in next years draft they might be handed over some ping pong balls...

They selected him in the actual draft, and about that...

Of course they can't select anybody this year, they won't be in the league this season. but next year in the real draft they will get a pick, although i fI recall correctly they can't have a top 5 pick or something. That's what the Raps and Grizz were like.

If history is anything to go by, Charlotte will probably get the sixth pick of the draft.

Young, unproven players who have played in a handful of games over a couple of years in the NBA. Aging veterans who are interested in the chance to be important players again. A couple of players somewhere in between. And with a lottery pick, a promising young rookie.

That's usually how expansion teams look in their first year. :)

They'll get the #4 pick in the draft.

There's a very good thread about this on RealGM if you're unwilling to search the net for a website explaining expansion. Click here.
If anyone has any more questions I suggest reading that thread first.

After getting the fourth overall pick in the 2004 draft, Charlotte will not have any restrictions in subsequent drafts, meaning it could get the top overall pick in the 2005 draft.

My mistake, I thought they would be restricted as Toronto and Vancouver were back in 1995. Good news for the Bobcats. :)

Please Charlotte take Vin Baker

But that would mean Vin in a Celtic uniform for at least one more year. Wouldn't it be better to find someone stupid enough to trade for him before then?

I'm not sure if we'll see those kind of guys come out of the woodwork, but we'll probably see more of guys like DeShawn Stevenson.

I was wondering which players would those bobcats pick should they play this next season. There are some pretty deep teams that properly ripped off would feed them with some nice unprotected, young talent, such as the pacers, clippers, kings, detroit...

if u can protect 8 players sacrafices have to be made but if u really believe in a kids talent u just protect him and let an old proven vet go, riscs of the business :D , and besides some players will get a chance to prove their worth or play again which necessarily aint worse than sitting on the bench with a already deep team

But there is a good chance that this expansion team will feature more competitiveness than the latter ones, like Toronto or Vancouver, that had to share an already scarce amount of talent...

Charlotte will probably only be able to take one player per team, so deep teams won't lose too much talent in the expansion draft.

Guys like Gerald wallace, Croshere, Corliss Williamson, Tyrone Nesby, Tariq-Abdul-Wahad, Moiso, Antonio Daniels, Danny Fortson, Marko Jaric, Wesley Person, Lonny Baxter, Michael Doleac plus one fine rookie wouldn't make such a terrible expansion team as those that featured Ed Pinckney or armen Gilliam as starters...
