Hollinger Stats...

... for those who have heard of them/know what they are, what do you think of them? I've got access to them via ESPN Insider, and they are pretty interesting at first glance -- being a mathemetician and loving baseball's sabermetrics, this is right up my alley.

What do you think is the most valuable of these stats, and why?

Right now I'm judging various players' TS% against one another and coming up with some interesting results. I think this number could give a more accurate measure of, say, FG Rating in NBA Live; as I feel far too often big men are given too great of a FG Rating, and others given lower than they deserve. TS% takes Free Throws and 3-pointers into consideration with the formula, so some of that error is (theoretically) removed.

As for the previous questions, here is the formula listed for TS% (True Shot Percentage)...

True Shooting Percentage calculates what a player’s shooting percentage would be if we accounted for free throws and 3-pointers. True Shooting Percentage = (Total points x 50) divided by [(FGA + (FTA x 0.44)]

I can't recommend it enough, by far my favorite stats site of any sport.

Used occasionally by NBA offices as consultants. They were a somewhat high profile consultant for resigning Andrei Kirilenko close to max, accurately predicting he'd turn into a monster.

I don't know which are specifically Hollinger stats, but if you're going to look at broad, overall performance i'm a fan of the Roland Rating. It takes into account PER and on/off-court +/-, which values player who contribute with more than just Points.

Yes, 82games show inside/outside stats. Go to the team you want, then pick the player, like Kobe, then pick Player Stats.

You can see here that Bryant shoots primarily from the outside:
79% Jumpers
21% Inside (including a nice 3% dunk)

His eFG% is 46.3% on jumpers, but he's better going inside as his eFG% then is 55%...although he gets blocked 12% of the time. His effectiveness inside versus just shooting it from the outside may be a reason why Jackson & Winter want to try him at SF position.

maes, are these stats sortable anywhere? i.e. who has the highest Passing Rating, Block Rating, etc. as to create a formula that can be used to edit ratings in Live??
