First Half of the NBA Season: Sixers
Well it’s been 1 half of the Philadelphia 76ers 05-06 NBA Season, and things could be better. At the seasons start, the Sixers were struggling big-time. Kicking off the Season with a 3 game losing streak, including disheartening loses to the Bucks, Pistons, and Bobcats. The Sixers were being booed on their own Home Court, and the future wasn’t looking good. Then the Sixers started winning again, in fact ; they went on a 6 game winning streak, including wins over the Pacers and Mavericks. In my opinion, this had been the best the Sixers had been playing in the current season as of late. One of the best performers of the win streak, was Andre Iguodala, scorching the Raptors for 26 points, a career-high, which makes me think back to the 2004 NBA Draft, in which the Raptors had the 8th pick, with Andre Iguodala on the Draft Board, the Raptors took Rafael Arujo, a huge disappointment, doing nothing special in his NBA career to-date. Moving along the Season, the Sixers became a terrible defensive team, giving up around 98 Points Per Game, but the bright side was that they were the second best scoring team, averaging about 102 Points Per Game.
So now what? The Sixers are about 2 games above the .500 Win-Loss Mark; heading into a Season long 7 game road trip. The trip was somewhat disappointing, to say the least. They went for 2 wins, and 5 losses on the trip. The only 2 wins were against the Denver Nuggets, backed up by an Allen Iverson game-winning jumper, and the other win against the Sacramento Kings. But after the trip, the Sixers would play 7 of their 9 next games at Home. They played normal in their 9 games, maintaining their record at the .500 mark. Then came a very surprising game again the Boston Celtics, the Sixers were down by as many as 16, then they came back in the Fourth Quarter to send it to Overtime; The game would go to Triple OT, including a buzzer-beating 3 pointer at the end of the Second OT. The Sixers won the game 125-124 backed up by good team play. I think this game was quite sloppy, featuring many Turnovers by both teams. A quote from Sixers Head Coach Maurice Cheeks after the game: “This win against the Celtics, was a season changing game [In a good way]”. Well it wasn’t, the Sixers went on a 2 game losing streak, although they played so bad it seemed like more than 2 losses. The good news was that the Sixers would go on to win their next 4 out of 6 games, but at a huge cost: The loss of Allen Iverson to an ankle injury from stepping on the foot of Dwight Howard. So now as the season moves along to a second half, I expect much better team play from the Sixers, rater than having the offense run through Allen Iverson, also, the defense must dramatically improve for the Philadelphia 76ers to make it past the 1st round of the Playoffs, so my prediction for the Philadelphia 76ers Final Record is: 44-38.
Just a quick article I wrote for my school paper, hopefully it makes it in.
