Quote of the Weekend
"[Gasol] is a good player but he's not that good. We should have had an answer for him."
-- Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki, criticizing his team's defense against Grizz forward Pau Gasol (36 points) in a 112-92 loss Saturday.

It was Reincarnation Night in L.A. on Sunday.

Michael Jordan ... Magic Johnson ... back in business for one night.

---what a show between kobe and kidd, and one thing odom sucks...

Here I thought Gasol was gonna say he fuckin sucked. What do you want him to say, "Shit man, he's just better than me. I suck donkey dick"?

Don't compare Kobe and Kidd to Magic and Michael, please.

Yes. It's just that most of the ones who visit here don't...

aldrin, Jae might've went a little overboard since there are tons of Filipinos who just post incoherent stuff on this board that has stained our reputation. His point, post something that makes sense. Instead of a bunch of quotes without a point. What does Dirk ripping on Pau have to do with Kobe and Kidd and how Odom sucks?

well on topic.....i don't think Dirk should be talking, especially since he got OWNED by T-Mac all series long last year. Playing like that makes Gasol > Nowitzki

The comparison is a good example of what's wrong with the marketing/hype machine of the NBA these days. Instead of comparing the feeling of watching a great matchup between today's players, direct comparisons are constantly being made in an effort to push and re-enforce the idea that such and such a player is the new (insert former great here). There's no way the players of the current generation can stand alone as themselves if they're constantly being billed as the "reincarnation" of stars from yesteryear.

I know comparisons can be made, just as players in the 90s were compared to their forerunners. But these days the comparisons seem to go a little far, with the NBA trying too hard to market a whole lot of players in the hope that one will become a true marquee player instead of having several possible candidates as they do right now.

Great post Andrew. Reminds me of how Alex Shelley (TNA/ROH Wrestler for the uninformed) has billed himself as the "Next Alex Shelley"
