Mourning to play next year

Postby Amphatoast on Sun Aug 21, 2005 1:54 am

MIAMI -- Miami center Alonzo Mourning announced Wednesday that he will return for another season with the Heat.

The 35-year-old Mourning had been contemplating retirement since the Heat were eliminated by the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals two months ago.

"I remain more committed than ever to bring a championship to Miami,'' Mourning said in a statement released by the team.

The former All-Star center was due to become a free agent after last season, but the Heat picked up the option on his contract in June.

"We feel his decision to come back is going to be critical toward our success and goal of winning an NBA championship,'' team president Pat Riley said. "We have the utmost respect for Alonzo and he deserves to be part of this championship run.''

A win away from the NBA Finals last season, Mourning's return is just the latest move for the Heat. In the last month, the Heat signed Shaquille O'Neal to a five-year deal and dealt awayEddie Jones, Rasual Butler and Qyntel Woods in a 13-player, five-team trade that brought Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, James Posey and Andre Emmett to South Florida.

"I'm thrilled with all the improvements the team has made this summer and can't wait to get on the court and start playing,'' Mourning said.

Mourning averaged 5.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.74 blocks in 19 games backing up O'Neal last season, after he signed with the Heat in March as a free agent after playing two seasons with New Jersey.

He averaged 7.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 37 games with the two teams last season.

In his 14 NBA seasons, Mourning has averaged 19.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.93 blocks in 671 career NBA games. He ranks sixth in NBA history in blocks per game, 14th in total blocks and 29th in field goal percentage.

good news for miami. This team is really overloaded. If they get Finley only a internal breakdown can stop them like what happened with the Lakers a couple years ago

LOL at Kobe101.

Zo is a great backup for Shaq, he is still a strong defensive presence in the paint.
Doleac and that Barron guy are right behind him, so he can have a rest when he needs it.

With all the "Dream Team" hype going on, I can see it happening. I can see them making it all the way to the NBA Finals then choke and get eliminated by the Spurs.

if they choke it's shaq fault. It happened once in LA, if it happens here only 1 person in common with both teams, Shaq!
but this team is deeper with Mourning and Walker off the bench

Not entirely. Bryant chose for acrobatics over passing. Bad decision.

it wasn't all kobes fault... he made the game winning shot which avoided the lakers getting swept not to mention he had a 6'9 tashyuan prince who has a 7'2 wingspan guarding him and even if he managed to blow by prince they had a 2headed monster down low....
PPL r a little feisty these days:D

At least you have a good player like Mourning who can comes in when Shaq is in early foul trouble, Miami's centers are tough to beat. You gotta give them credit for that. But is this team like the 03-04 Lakers. We will find out in the 2006 playoffs.

Sounds like Zo might have something left in the tank. He's clearly no longer the Zo of the 90s but he doesn't need to be. I'm still skeptical about the acquisitions of Walker and J-Will but the Heat are set at centre. I'd say they're still one of the favourites to come out of the East.

I think its great that Zo wants to play another year.He wants 1 more chance to win an NBA championship. He'll also let fans see probally his last season in NBA as a member of the Miami Heat.

Shaq has to accept some of the blame for LA losing too.

We always hear him complaining to the media that he doesn't get the ball enough after the series' are already over.

He should speak up to his teammates while the series is still going on.

i guess its good that hes still playing just because of his past but the one thing that always made me hate Zo was that he shows sooooo much emotion that its annoying as fuck. It could be a blowout he'll be in there, game is outta reach and someone like, jamal sampson a nobody, will go for a layup and Zo will block it and he goes all buck wild and start trash talking this horrible player even though the game is all but done. Besides that i think zo is a great defensive center.
