Bobby Simmons wins MIP

Bobby Simmons of the Los Angeles Clippers was a runaway winner of the NBA Most Improved Player award Thursday, easily topping Miami All-Star Dwyane Wade and Detroit standout Tayshaun Prince despite playing on a losing team.

Simmons, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, is the first Clippers player to win the award that started following the 1985-86 season. Portland's Zach Randolph won it last year.

Simmons received 59 first-place votes and 384 points in voting by sports writers and broadcasters. Wade got 15 first-place votes and 129 points, and Prince had 14 first-place votes and 107 points.

Nice selection, though not exactly a surprising one. I'm surprised to see LeBron and Wade so high on the list; I'm also surprised that Grant Hill was considered such a worthy candidate. After all, his game hasn't improved, just his health.

Charlotte's Primoz Brezec was fourth with 75 points, and New Orleans' Dan Dickau was fifth with 68. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three for each second-place vote and one for each third-place vote.

Prince was a dumb selection IMO, he got more MPG, about 6 more, and improved as any player his age should. It was really not anything marginal.

Probably just people who felt Grant deserved at least SOMETHING for the way he came back this year. They should really bring back the comeback player of the year award.

That's true. I agree, the Comeback Player of the Year award should of made a comeback of its own.

Just took another look at that list, Shaquille O'Neal is even more of a surprising choice for a MIP vote. His numbers don't really warrant it and he's already established his dominance and ability to make an impact on a team. He's an MVP candidate, not a MIP candidate.

Marion I could see but Vince and Dirk are definitely two more odd choices that don't really seem to be in the spirit or criteria of the MIP award.

Shaq makes no sense, Marion just returned to the way he was playing before, Dirk got more aggressive and whatnot, but Vince just started trying. But I can see an uneducated columnist idiot giving him a vote.

I disagree on this. Last season Prince averaged 33 mins, scored about 10ppg and shot at 47%. This season in the first 2 months he was pretty much the same. Then in January he started kicking ass. No longer whas he an occasional contributor, he became aggresive and is now Detroit's best low post option as well as a 20+ point threat each night.

This season he's gotten 37mpg but also upped his points 10.3 to 14.7, rebounds from 4.7 to 5.3 and assists from 2.3 to 3.0 as well as a marginal increase in bpg. He also increased his FG% to 49. It's evident in the way that he plays that he's had a pretty big improvement.

it probably was the easiest award to predict, but good work by Simmons its good see guys that come from the bottom and do so well.

I think the Clippers will resign Simmons to a new contract and likely try and pursue a sign and trade with the Sonics for Maggette + Wilcox + Other/s, Dunleavy definitely wants Allen on his side considering the history they have.

Who knows we might see the Clippers in the post season next season if they do acquire Allen and maybe a backup point guard.

PG - Could keep Jaric, he can backup both the 2 and 3, problem is that he's gotten injured every single year he's been a Clipper. It seems like he has nagging injuries.

I really don't think the Clips will be able to get Allen there, but I hope so. Really all that's needed is a shooter and clutch player at the 2. Michael Redd is also an option, and maybe Joe Johnson...

I agree, I don't see Ray Allen comign to the Clips. I don't think he wants to be here. Also, Sterling throwing down 90 million for 4 years......
