They like to show them off, it's just the trend.
(American) football players cannot do it in such a flashy way because of their bulky equipment, so with sleeveless jerseys it is much easier. :)

Yeah, NBA players have a lot of places to show tats... look at iverson, he's got one on his neck too I think.
