Thanks

I'd just like to say thanks for all the work you have put into EAGE :) Without it, most of the patches out there would never be as easy to install. Keep it up

Tru dat!

Brien is the underrated god of everybody who patches...and they don't even know it

Thanks for the words of encouragement. :o

Do any of you guys have any interest in beta testing a new program when it becomes available?

Wed Apr 02, 2003 11:10 am

Sure, why not? :)

Ok. It's gonna be a while longer, but when I think it is ready for beta testing, I will send a copy to everyone who replies to this post.

When you develop an application you tend to run the same types of tests over and over again, and you mislead yourself into thinking everything works fine. The first public release of EAGE actually didn't work at all  , but is seemed to work find on my machine.

What kind of program is it?

It is an individual fsh editor.

It will have a GUI interface, and will allow you to build fsh files from scratch or import graphics into existing fsh files. This tool will give you full access to all fsh parameters, so it is not a tool for novices. The import wizard in EAGE does a lot of stuff behind the scenes. This new tool will give the user a lot more choices, and, thus, more opportunities to crash their computer :D

EAGE was coded years ago, and the engine can not accommodate new fsh features easily. This new tool will be not be able to view all the file types that EAGE can, but it will be able to edit much more freely than EAGE.

So basically if your not a patcher this tool won't be much use to you? hehe ok. :)

I'm hoping it will let me make parts invisible.

What parts do you want to make invisible?

Right now I am working on a feature that will allow the creation of 8 bpp fsh files from RGB files. That is, it will do away with the need to mess with separate palettes (and palette transparency).

The next step after this editor is done, it to make a transparency editor. (maybe that's the tool you are talking about that will "make parts invisible"). Currently, it appears that people are either using the transparency editor in EAGE or making two files (RGB and a 8bbp transparency) to import through nfshtool. As for paletted images, I am not sure how people are doing it.

Well..for one thing...if you look at the 1970's - 50's jersey shorts: half of the shorts are made invisible. If you put these shorts on other players..it looks like they are wearing medium length shorts! I was gonna make this a publicly known thing but it's not currently possible to recreate what EA did with that (i asked through andrew).

Can your program(s) let us be able to make parts of the shorts invisible so as to make different lengths of shorts?
:)

If my memory serves me correctly, the jersey and shorts are saved in DXT1 format. DXT1 doesn't store explicit alpha (transparency) information. DXT3 format does. So, there may be a way to make part of DXT1s transparent, if half of the short was blocked out with one color (like black), a little know DXT1 feature Or, we could try saving DXT3 information to the file and see if the game will read it (or crash :) ).

Either way, the new tool will allow more of this type of experimentation. I'll take a look at the older shorts and see if there is any clue in the file. It may be that EA changes the shorts programatically (to make them short) for the legends.
