How does a player really grow in franchise?

Sun Apr 13, 2003 1:55 pm

besides careerpkg, is there any other setting that affects a created player's growth (not CPU generated) in the franchise?

ive tried to create many rookies with careerpkg "A" but they don't seem to grow in the franchise mode, instead they fall. :(

There's no other settings that determine player development.

ok

so can you explain to me why when i create 5 rookies and use them in a franchise all as starters on the same team only one grows (and they all have careerpkg A)

A CAREERPKG of A only increases the odds of a player developing ie. they have a better chance at receiving an "envelope" with improved ratings in the offseason. There is still a chance that a player with a CAREERPKG of A will not develop to his full potential.

Just like in real life I might add.

so what exactly is an envelope

The process of increasing/decreasing player ratings is loosely based on the principle of the player receiving an "envelope" containing either increased ratings or decreased ratings.

I think there's about 10 different "envelopes", each representing a certain level of improvement/decline. The higher the CAREERPKG, the higher the chances of drawing an "envelope" that will increase the player's ratings.

Hope that made sense. :)

Exactly. Not every player lives up to their potential - in NBA Live, it's a little more random than real life, but it still reflects the careers of some NBA players. :)

so how does the player's envelope value even affect someone's career development

Wed Apr 16, 2003 1:40 pm

I'm not sure which ENVELOPE values correspond to which level of player improvement/decline. All I know is that some "envelopes" are good for player development, other "envelopes" are bad. The CAREERPKG determines the chances of receiving a good or bad "envelope".

10 is the best envelope. The player improves on both offense and defense and peaks at age 30. Good improvement in athletism.
0 is probably the second best. The player too improves on both offense and defense, but not in steals and 3pt shooting. However the rate of improvement in other major statistical categories is pretty dramatic. Peaks at age 30. Usually seen in development of big men. If you want a lot of points, blocks, rebounds and decent assists, this is the one. Limited improvement in athletism.
1 and 11 are examples of good envelopes where the player improves greatly on defense but little on offense. Will peak at 31 instead of 30.
There are other good envelopes where the player stops improving after the age of 26. For these the improvements come on offense only. 1-dimensional, but better than no improvement at all.
Anyway 10 is my favorite envelope :D
