version previous to 5.0 installed, we recommend you click Yes.
*If you have DirectX 5.0 or higher installed to your computer, we
recommend you click No.
DIRECTX INSTALLATION NOTES
DirectX is an Application Programming Interface provided by Microsoft, which
gives Windows 95 based applications high-performance, real-time access to your
hardware. This makes the DirectX API well suited for Windows 95 games. NBA
LIVE 98 uses the DirectX 5 API (the latest iteration of DirectX at the time of release)
and includes DirectX 5 files which you can install.
Two DirectX components, DirectDraw and DirectSound, may require updating your
video card and sound card drivers respectively, for proper operation of these
components. Using video card and sound card drivers that do not have DirectX
support will result in display and audio problems in DirectX applications.
During the installation of DirectX, your video card and sound card drivers
will be updated if required.
The DirectX 5 files included with NBA LIVE 98 include drivers for most video cards
and sound cards from the major manufacturers of these peripherals. For new
hardware, and for lesser known brands of peripherals, you may have to contact
your manufacturer to obtain drivers that support DirectX.
After installing DirectX 5, you can check to see if your video card or sound
card drivers support DirectX:
1. Click the Start button on your Windows 95 Taskbar. Then click Run...
2. From the Run dialog box, type d:\directx5\directx\dxsetup then click OK.
(Substitute the correct letter of your CD drive if other than 'D:')
3. Look at Display Driver and Audio Driver.
The second column displays the driver version number; the third, whether or
not your driver is Certified by Microsoft as supporting DirectX.
*If your Display Driver or Audio Driver says "No Hardware Support" in this
column, you must contact the manufacturer to obtain updated drivers,
which have DirectX support.
*If your Display Driver or Audio Drivers says "Certified" in this column,
your video card or sound card supports DirectX, and it should work
properly in DirectX applications.
*If your Display Driver or Audio Driver is blank in this column, your video
card or sound card driver supposedly supports DirectX, and is waiting
for Certified approval from Microsoft.
IMPORTANT NOTE: During DirectX 5 installation, the setup program checks
to see if it can successfully update your drivers. If the driver being replaced has
not been tested or if replacing the driver is known to cause problems, the
setup program warns you accordingly. We recommend that you heed these warnings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
c) RE-INSTALLING THE GAME
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you are having problems or the game did not install correctly the
first time, we recommend re-installing the game.
i. Start the Windows 95 operating system.
ii. Insert the NBA LIVE 98 CD in your CD drive. The Autorun menu appears.
NOTE: If the Autorun menu does not automatically appear, click the Start
button on your Windows 95 Taskbar, then click Run.... At the Run dialog box,
type d:\autorun, then click OK.
(substitute the correct letter of your CD drive if other than 'D:').
iii. At the Autorun menu, click RE-INSTALL. A prompt appears asking you to
confirm your choice.
* To cancel the Re-install, click No.
iv. Click Yes. NBA LIVE 98 is removed from your hard drive.
v. Click OK. The Setup menu appears.
* Continue from Step 3 of Installing the Game.
> INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
If you encounter any problems during the installation process which are not
covered in the game documentation or the reference card, please contact
Electronic Arts(tm) Customer Support (see `Getting Technical Support' at the
end of this file).
===========================================================
3) Manual Updates and Additions
===========================================================
===========================================================
4) Memory Tips
===========================================================
> WINDOWS 95 MEMORY
NBA Live 98 requires 16 MB of physical memory, and also requires that virtual
memory be enabled (this can be enabled using "System" in the Windows
Control Panel); we advise that you permit Windows 95 to manage the amount
of virtual memory automatically.
===========================================================
5) Sound System Tips
===========================================================
> WINDOWS 95 SOUND
Make sure you have the correct Windows 95 drivers for your sound card installed.
(Refer to the sound card documentation provided by the manufacturer). Your
sound card and driver must have DirectSound support in order for NBA Live 98 to
run properly. If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound you may
experience choppy or stuttering sound, or sound that cuts in and out. During DirectX
installation, the DirectX setup program attempts to install a DirectSound supported
driver for your sound card. If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound,
the DirectX setup program attempts to replace your existing sound card driver. Please
consult your sound card manufacturer for updated drivers if DirectSound drivers are not
available with the included DirectX 5 files from Microsoft.
Should you ever replace your existing sound card with a different one, follow the
manufacturer's instructions for installing the new card. Once you've verified that
the sound card works properly under Windows 95, run the game again and it
should automatically be detected; it should not be necessary to run the installer
again to configure the game for your new sound card.
Note that Slower CD-ROM drives may cause audio to stutter between menu
screens under Windows 95.
===========================================================
6) Video Tips
===========================================================
> WINDOWS 95 VIDEO PROBLEMS
Choppy or stuttering video or audio problems while running in Windows 95 may be
corrected by adjusting the CD-ROM read-ahead caching. This option is available
by right-clicking on your local drive, selecting Properties, then Performance, File
System, CD-ROM and choosing "Optimize access pattern for quad-speed or higher"
from the menu. The "Supplemental Cache Size" should be set to minimum. Setting
this to maximum will not improve performance in NBA LIVE 98, and may actually
harm performance by reserving RAM that would otherwise be available for the
game.
>Diamond Viper Pro
You may experience problems with the Diamond Viper Pro video card with some of
EA's games. If you are experiencing difficulties, you can disable PCI burst mode
transfers in your PC's BIOS setup. If your PC's BIOS does not have this feature,
Diamond supplies a utility that you can use to disable PCI burst mode transfers. If
you have access to the Internet, you can download the utility at Diamond's FTP site at
ftp://ftp.diamondmm.com/pub/misc/burst.exe.
>Oak Driver Package 6.01
We have experienced problems using Oak Driver Package 6.01 with NBA 98 PCCD.
Avoid using this version of the driver package. Use Oak Driver Package Version 4.01
for best results.
>Tseng Labs W32p PCI Video Card
We have experienced poor performance problems using the Microsoft provided
"Tseng Labs ET4000/W32 PCI" drivers and NBA LIVE 98. We recommend that
you use the latest Tseng Labs provided "Tseng Labs ET4000/W32 PCI" drivers
for better results.
>Trident TGUI9680 Video Card
With this Trident card, we have experienced problems with the driver installed
by DirectX 5. Please use your standard Trident TGUI9680 driver for better results.
>Sierra Screamin 3D PCI Drivers
We have experienced problems when NBA LIVE 98 is run with the "Sierra
Screamin'3D PCI" v.4.03.00.9001-1.13 driver. This can be taken care of when
Direct X5 is installed. At that time, DirectX 5 will prompt you to replace the existing
drivers with the Certified "Rendition Verite 100" drivers (which work with NBA 98).
Direct X5 will recommend that you choose YES and replace your existing drivers. This
will correct the problem. If you choose not to replace the divers, you will continue to
experience problems running NBA LIVE 98. Keep in mind that this only happens with
the driver listed above. If you use the more recent driver "Sierra Screamin'3D PCI"
v.4.03.00.9001-2.10.06, NBA LIVE 98 will work fine.
===========================================================
7) Game Controller Tips
===========================================================
> NBA LIVE 98 CONTROLLERS
A Microsoft compatible mouse is required to navigate through the front end
screens and menus of NBA LIVE 98. It is also required to operate the Pause
Menu and Instant Replay during gameplay.
During gamplay, the keyboard may be used, however for maximum enjoyment
of NBA LIVE 98 we recommend using an analog joystick, Gravis Gamepad Pro,
or the Gravis GrIP during gameplay.
If the gameplay controller responds erratically during gameplay, you may need to
recalibrate it, or your game port may not be configured correctly. Refer to your
game/sound card documentation for configuration information.
> WINDOWS 95 CONTROLLER CALIBRATION
Windows 95 users that experience calibration or control problems with their
controllers may need to configure them properly using the Windows 95 Joystick
Control Panel. Once you have done this, run the game again.
Go to the Control Panel, click on the system icon, and select the Device Manger
tab. Make sure your gameport joystick driver is listed under Sound, video and
game controllers and is functioning properly.
Calibrate and choose your joystick configuration from the Control Panel. Click on
the Joystick Icon and select your joystick from the list. Click Calibrate and
follow the onscreen instructions to calibrate your joystick.
It is possible to experience problems calibrating Gravis Gamepads and Gamepad Pros
in Windows 95 using the Microsoft Gaming Devices applet that comes with Direct X5.
For best results when using any Gravis product, obtain the latest Gravis Grip drivers
from Advanced Gravis Computer Technology Ltd. at http://www.gravis.com.
> GRAVIS GRIP CALIBRATION
Make sure the Gravis GrIP is connect to the joystick port correctly. Make sure
that the switch on the Gravis MultiPort is switched to the left (4 port side), or
right if using a standard joystick. Make sure that the Gravis GrIP drivers are
installed (for Windows 95 or DOS depending on what you are running the game
from). If they are not, please refer to your GrIP documentation. Make sure
that the Gravis GrIP controls are calibrated under Windows 95 Gravis GrIP
Calibration in Windows 95:
1. Open the Control Panel and double click on the Joystick Icon.
2. Select Joystick 1 (current joystick)
3. Under Joystick Configuration select Gravis GrIP MultiPort, and click
Calibrate
4. Follow the on screen instructions. Then test the joystick by selecting Test.
5. Repeat the above procedures for Joysticks 2,3, and 4 if they are available.
Once these steps have been completed the green light should appear on the left
wing of the Gravis MultiPort.
===========================================================
8) CD-ROM Tips
===========================================================
> CD-ROM REQUIREMENTS
A quad speed (4x) CD-ROM drive is required to run NBA LIVE 98. A slow CD-ROM
can adversely affect screen load times, audio playback, and video playback. See
Audio Tips and Video Tips for more information.
If you receive a "File not found" error message when installing or running the game,
make sure that the CD is in the CD drive. The CD must be in the drive to install
or run the game.
> WINDOWS CD-ROM SETUP
Ensure that you are using 32-bit native Windows 95 drivers to control your
CDROM drive. These drivers can be configured from the Control Panel of Windows
95.
Do not use a DOS-based 16-bit driver (loaded in CONFIG.SYS) to control your
CD-ROM. Performance may be significantly reduced.
===========================================================
9) 3-D Accelerator Tips
===========================================================
NBA LIVE 98 supports 3-D accelerators that use the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics or
Voodoo Rush chipsets.
During install, NBA Live 98 will automatically detect your supported 3D accelerator
if it has been properly installed. The installation procedure will create an extra 3Dfx
NBA Live 98 icon in the Program Group and a 3Dfx shortcut icon on the desktop. These
icons will start the 3-D accelerated version of the game.
If you experience problems with the detection of your supported 3-D accelerator card,
please check the installation documentation provided with your 3-D accelerator card.
VOODOO GRAPHICS BOARDS
NBA LIVE 98 requires that you have the Glide run time drivers for the Voodoo Graphics
chipset installed on your system.
If you do not have the Glide run time drivers for the Voodoo Graphics chipset
installed or you have drivers older than version 2.42, the NBA LIVE 98 installation
program will start the Glide 2.42 installation which will install the Glide 2.42 driver
to your system. Alternatively, you may contact your board manufacturer to obtain the
latest drivers for your board.
If you are using a version of the Glide run time drivers later than 2.42,
no Glide drivers are installed.
VOODOO RUSH BOARDS
NBA LIVE 98 requires that you have the glide 2.42 or higher run time drivers specific
for the Voodoo Rush chipset installed on your system. If you do not have the Glide
run time drivers for the Voodoo Rush chipset installed or you have driver older than
version 2.42, the NBA LIVE 98 installation program will start the Glide 2.42
installation which will install the Glide 2.42 driver to your system. Alternatively,
you may contact your board manufacturer to obtain the latest drivers for your board.
If you do not have a Voodoo Rush Glide 2.4 or higher run time driver installed
on your system, please contact your board manufacturer.
Note: There is a rare bug with the 3Dfx detect function in the Glide 2.42 Installer
which will prevent it from detecting your 3Dfx properly. When you install the game,
if you get a message that reads "Error: Can not detect hardware", press OK until the
setup continues and install the game as normal. If you get the error message, you will
also not be able to install Glide 2.42 from the CD-ROM. In this case, if you have
problems running NBA Live 98, please download the newest version of the Glide drivers
from the 3Dfx web site at www.3dfx.com.
===========================================================
10) Gameplay Performance Tips
===========================================================
If gameplay is not as smooth or responsive as desired, there are several things
that can be done to improve performance. In general, your computer's CPU
speed will be the most important measure of performance, but memory
configuration and CD-ROM configuration can also affect performance. Refer to
Memory Tips and CD-ROM tips earlier in this document.
> WINDOWS 95 PERFORMANCE
To ensure maximum performance, ensure that no other Windows 95 applications
are running. Look at the Windows Task bar and close any applications that are
currently running.
> DETAIL SETTINGS
To improve speed and responsiveness in gameplay, you can use the "Details" screen
in the Pause menu to toggle various options on or off.
Details that may improve gameplay performance:
- Reduce the Game Window Size
- Change video mode to Low Resolution (320 x 200)
- Change the Player detail
- Change the Shadow detail
- Turn off the court floor textures
- Turn off the crowd
- Turn off Smooth Court Lines
- Turn off the reflections
===========================================================
11) Modem Connect Tips
===========================================================
NBA LIVE 98 requires a 100% Hayes compatible 9600 bps or faster modem,
with a high speed (16550 UART) serial port for modem play. Note that in
Windows 95, you may not be able to run your modem on COM4 if you have a
video card based on the S3 chip-set. Please try a different COM port.
> MODEM DOES NOT INITIALIZE
- Make sure you selected the correct modem in the Modem Configuration screen
of the game.
- Make sure that there are no other peripherals (e.g., mouse) that are conflicting
with the modem.
- Make sure that all modem settings (e.g., COM port, IRQ) are correct. (Please
consult your modem documentation for proper installation.)
- Customize the INIT STRING by adding ",,," to the end of the initialization string.
- Try selecting a different modem port speed in the modem configuration screen.
> MODEMS CONNECT BUT DO NOT EXIT SYNCHRONIZATION
- Make sure you selected the correct modem in the Modem Configuration screen
of the game.
- While you are in the game, abort the connection, and try connecting again.
- Try selecting a different modem port speed in the modem configuration screen.
It is recommended that both modems are set to the same modem port speed.
> GENERAL MODEM INFORMATION
- Your modem must be set to connect with data compression disabled. Your
modem should not be locked into any specific speed settings.
- Hardware (RTS/CTS) flow control must be enabled.
- Consult your modem manual for the appropriate AT commands to set these
options and insert them into the initialization string.
- When modems have trouble connecting, the problem may be that they did not
initialize properly. Try turning off both modems, then start the connection
procedure again.
- If you are experiencing slow or choppy gameplay after connecting: This may be
due to data compression, being enabled. Consult your modem owners manual for
the proper initialization string to disable these settings.
- Some modems load settings into NVRAM (non-volatile RAM) when you turn them
on; these settings may be incompatible with NBA Live 98.
- If your modem has difficulty initializing and there are no apparent COM port or
IRQ conflicts, try the following: go into a communications program (e.g., Terminal
for Windows 3.x, Procomm, etc.) and type AT&F. Wait for the OK then type
AT&W0. Your modem is reset with the factory default settings loaded into
NVRAM.
- Note that you should set the modem port speed to a setting that is equal to
or higher than the highest connection rate that your modem is capable of
(e.g., if you have a 28.8 kbps or 28800 bps modem, set the modem port speed
to 57600 bps). Otherwise, the data transfer between your modem and your
computer may not be able to keep up with the data transfer between your
modem and the modem you are connected to.
===========================================================
12) Network Connect Tips
===========================================================
NBA LIVE 98 requires an IPX protocol network for network play. If you experience
difficulties with network play, you may want to consult your network manual or
network administrator for specific information on loading drivers.
> CONFIGURATION
- Do not run any Windows 95 applications that communicate over the network
in the background (e.g., mail programs, personal schedulers, system or network
monitors).
- Make sure you have disabled network messages. (If you are running a Novell
network, from the MS-DOS prompt type "SEND /A=N" without quotations to
turn them off.)
- NBA LIVE 98 network play is not compatible with "File and Printer Sharing for
Netware Networks" if installed in Windows 95.
- You must load your network drivers when you boot your machine. Sample driver
names include LSL, IPX, IPXODI and 3c5x9. You must load a Link Support Layer
driver, your Network Interface card driver, and an IPX driver.
> CONNECTION PROBLEMS
- Make sure the computers you are trying to connect are on the same network,
and are using the IPX protocol.
- If there are communication problems in the game, try closing all applications,
and rebooting the computer. Clearing memory may solve these problems.
> NETWORK PERFORMANCE ISSUES
- There are various things you can do to make sure you get the best
performance out of your network game.
- These apply to the host computer as well as the clients, but try them on the
host alone first as this may solve all the problems.
- Make sure the host computer, (the one that starts the network game) is the
fastest computer.
- High-traffic networks will slow the game down considerably. Avoid playing the
game at peak traffic hours, while there are large file transfers or print jobs being
done.
