How can you play NBA 2000 on a local area network?

Has anyone gotten 2 pcs, a router / switch / hub, and some ethernet cables together to play this game? I probably have a second machine ready for NBA 2000, but does it need 2 cds for it to work?

I'm afraid that the answer is yes, as you cannot even launch the game without a CD
