You don't have to worry about reformatting your computer! There is a very simple solution to avoid this problem with the login. I wrote a guide recently to respond to one user on the NBA 2K official forums. Here's a copy and paste of it...
The solution to the problem is this!
1. Go to your old PC and take out the registry key of NBA 2K14 by going into Start-->regedit (Registry Editor).
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER--->Software>2K Sports Folder--->NBA 2K14.
3. Copy the entire registry data and export it and save it. It will have all the details of your Account, Username, Password and Serial Number.
4. Save it in your USB Drive and copy and import it onto your new PC and import the new registry key values.
5. Make sure you also copy the savegame file from your previous computer, or it may not work.
Now when you login to your new computer/reformatted PC it will automatically log you in without asking for user login or CD Key.
It works, I've tested it myself before when I had to reformat my PC with 2K13 and only saving the registry key and the save game file did the trick.
However, if you don't save those save game files, registry keys, then you are doomed unfortunately & will need to contact Customer Support. But hopefully you still have them on your other PC, make sure you transfer them onto your other computer!
In fact I did it again this time just a few days ago when I reformatted windows to upgrade to 64-bit OS from 32-bit. Same mechanism worked again, I'm still playing NBA 2K14 fine. So yeah, you don't have to worry about buying the Retail DVD version. Plus the advantage is that you will be able to install your game quicker on DVD even if it requires multiple DVDs to install. It's much easier to install 50 GB of data from DVDs than it is to download it via steam, even with a fast connection.
I reinstalled Max Payne 3 and Hitman: Absolution on my new 64-bit system using DVD versions. It took 45 minutes for the installation procedure but both of them are over 30 GB. Now imagine if I had to download all that data via steam? It would probably take 10 hours or more even with my 20 Mbps connection! This is why I would buy NBA 2K15 on DVD to avoid that hassle. Even if the game is steam works, we will still have the advantages to install the game via DVDs.
